2016 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/02/2016 | W0AAA

I have operated in quite a few Straight Key Nights over the years and always look forward to this event. One year I operated from my ice fishing shack out on a frozen lake. Another year I spent the evening operating from our deck at minus 20°F. In the SKN of 2005, a 45-minute QSO on 40 meters led to a big surprise. I learned that the fellow I was working collected old time QSL cards like I do. I mentioned that I had searched eBay for years looking for one of my dad's old QSLs from the 1930s. A week later, an envelope arrived in the mail. It contained a card from my dad, W9EAP, from a QSO he had in 1935! This year, I waited anxiously for the mailman to arrive. I had purchased a miniature telegraph key on eBay a week before and was hoping that it would arrive in time for SKN. With only a couple of hours to go, a box arrived and it was my key. It is a tiny red bakelite and brass key measuring 1.5 inches by 1 inch and weighing only 2 ounces. I ran my Icom 746 PRO and an 80 meter Cobra dipole with an LDG Z-100 tuner to make 14 QSOs on 9 different bands using my little key for each one. Another SKN has passed showing that CW is still alive and well! Until next year...73, WØAAA
