2016 ARRL Straight Key Night
SKN found the Solar A index higher than the latest snowfall in the High Sierra! A indexes in the dozens range made for not so good conditions, but I did manage to make seven SKN QSOs, although two of them, to the East coast were not much more than a signal report, as signals went in and out. I determined I would use only old WW2 Mil gear (my favorite stuff anyway, which I use constantly), but during one particularly bad spell of propagation I listened on a modern radio, which did no better than either of the mil receivers I was using.
Best QSOs were sith Bryce, K7UA in Salt Lake City, who was using a Japanese Hi-Mound bug, with a Hallicrafters S-40A receiver and a Lettine 240 transmitter, and with Roy K6GVG in Fallbrook CA, who was using a very sweet sounding Swan Cygnet transceiver until his power supply went belly-up.
Now I must confess…..I used a “keyboard” to do my sending, see below!
73, and see you next SKN or whenever, Howie WB2AWQ/7 Reno NV
