2016 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/05/2016 | WB8DQT

Morning of New Year's Day found 40 meters recovering from the poor conditions of the previous evening. Had a lot of fun with my little two tube vintage transmitter and Swedish Pump SK.  A lot of very good fists, which may well be the result of the SKCC! My memorable QSO nod goes to WD8RIF down in Athens, OH. It must have been interesting, for when I paused to log it when we were done, we had been chattng for over an hour!

Normally actiivity on 40 will fall off mid-day, but as the attached picture shows, there was no shortage of potential contacts at 3PM local time! What was missing this year were a lot of drifting and chirping signals. This may reflect the fact that many of the operators are now of an age where their "vintage" rigs were TS520s and FT101s as opposed to the typical tube transmiters of the fifties and sixties! From boat anchors to SDRs, everyone was having a great time and that is the definition of SKN!
