2016 ARRL Field Day

07/03/2016 | WA9STI

While I usually operate as a 1B in the mountains of Southern California, this year I was able to work Field Day in Wisconsin for the first time where I have a cabin on Cranberry Lake in Vilas County.  The site was a wooded island which is a county park on the lake which is near Eagle River.  I loaded my boat with gear and rode the .8 mile to the north end of the island.  Using an FT-817 with an amplifier to end fed dipoles up in the pine trees, I worked 160 stations on 20 and 40 meters SSB and CW.  I had my FT-857 as a backup but did not need it.  Because of an approaching thunderstorm on late Saturday afternoon (which later caused a power outage at the cabin), I had to cut my operation short on the island.  But I was back Sunday morning to finish up the rest of Field Day.  Due to heavy wind and wave action, one of my lines became undone to the boat and caused it to turn perpendicular to the island dock so I had handle that situation.  I was surprised when an hour before the end at 1800Z, I was able to work CA, NY, and VA on 40 meter SSB for an unusual long distance band opening.  Then I was surprised again when my XYL KB6LAS and sister kayaked over to visit.  But I had to tow the kayaks back with them and the gear in the boat because the waves were too rough for their return trip.  I will definitely plan another Field Day in North Woods of Wisconsin.
