2016 ARRL Field Day
My family was traveling during Field Day weekend 2016. However, I brought along my portable satellite station and operated under the 1B classification in the WTX section. I had several successful contacts via a handful of the current operational satellites. More stations need to practice satellites in advance of Field Day instead of trying to "wing it" by taking out their gear on Friday afternoon. Many stations were using poor techniques and equipment that doesn't work necessarily well with the current Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. It doesn't take much more than a few watts and an Arrow or Elk antenna to successfully work the current fleet of satellites. More power is not the answer. In fact, utilizing high power or even large beams and not being able to hear is a very selfish act. It takes away from transponder power and ruins the opportunity for many others to make a contact. Satellite is definitely best QRP these days with our LEO satellites and during Field Day is no exception. My advice is to get engaged with working satellites far in advance of Field Day.
