2018 ARRL International DX Contest (CW)

03/06/2018 | D44EE

I know Angelo D44BS (D4A) from visitting him back in 2015 where I also used his antennas for the ARRL Contest and that was a realy good experience.

In January this year I had some correspondance with Angelo about using his antennas for the ARRL CW DX Contest in 2018. We got the agreement that I could use his antennas and his chair for 5 days.

So I arrived in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, late at night the 15th of February. The next day I went to see Angelo and XYL Zizi D44BW, bringing my Elecraft K3 and my laptop computer. So, moving the antenna plug and the DC power cords from his Kenwood SG599S to my Elecraft took 5 minutes and I was on the air.

I was active some hours the 16th and the 17th and went early home to my hotel to get some sleep before the Contest started at 23:00 local time.

The first 5 hours of the contest I had an good rate on about 100 on the 20m and 40m bands. In lack of antennas for 80m and 160m I stopped around 6:00 UTC and went to hotel for some sleep.
Saturday from 10-17 UTC i Had some realy fast runs on 15m. Also good 20m and a small opening on 10m.
Sunday morning 01-05 UTC I had some contacts on 40m.
I started my last period at sunday 11:00 UTC and 20/15m operation - ended up on 40m with some nice contacts.

I use the UCXLog program and it has a feature where you can compare your results with the same contest in earlier years. So I could follow how bad it was this year missing 80m and missing 10m openings. Instead it was a satisfaction to see how 40m gave lot more.

The 19th I made some QSO's with mainly EU and SA.
At 16:15 UTC I packed my station together and said goodbye to Zizi and Angelo.

All in all I find it was a great experience and I likely ecourage others to make such a trip - it's a win-win  :-)

Meet you in the next CW Contest
