2018 ARRL Field Day
Renewing an old tradition, Tom & Rob, K4AEN & KK4R, set off in Tom's boat, the Miss Adventure for the planned FD operation in the Layfayette River. Miss Adventure had other plans, however, and blew her exhaust manifold to have her way. There was a metallic squeal, a loud BANG, and the plans were changed. Instead, FD was resumed dockside, which wasn't all bad, since it afforded bathrooms, showers, hot meals, and lots of socialization! We were especially fortunate to be visited by Asa, KH2N, for the evening, and we had a nice dinner and drinks before reboarding Miss Adventure and resuming operations with Asa on the radio until it was past his bedtime. Sunday morning, it was just Rob and Tom operating again.
A noteworthy event -- Tom brought his new Begali Sculpture, and Rob loved it, so mostly he used the paddle and not the memories for contacts. Asa, who also recently bought a Sculpture, turned out to have a very good fist, and it was a pleasure to hear his CW.
For lessons-learned, we will bring a power supply next time, so we can run from the generator instead of batteries, if necessary, since the charger is very noisy. That's it, so our planning was good, and we're hoping to do it again. Next time we will probably get to do the cruise too.
