2018 ARRL Field Day
For a change of venue this year, The Midway Amateur Radio Club of Kearney NE (WØKY 2A) kept it "closer to home" and set up at one of the local fire stations just on the edge of town. This made for an interesting scenario with adjacent powerlines to the north and east, plus a substation about 200 yards away. Surprisingly, the noise levels, while not ideal (S3-S5), were entirely bearable and we worked around it.
Being near the geographical center of the Lower 48, we get caught in the "crossfire" of the many signals from all over the country but it makes for a good variety, depending on the band conditions: in the true spirit of Field Day, it puts our skills to the test. And we have fun doing it! While 40 and 20 remained somewhat consistent, the openings on 15 and 10 on Sunday morning brought some welcome surprises.
As is the case every year, we learned yet even more of what works and what doesn't, and here's to an even better FD '19!
