2018 ARRL Field Day
The Williamsburg Area Amateur Radio club, K4RC, operated 2A with one station dedicated to CW and another to phone, plus our GOTA station and a 6 meter station setup in one of our county parks. We had good results at all stations considering the band conditions, and with the weather being good (though quite warm and a 30 minute startup delay due to a thunder storm) this ended up a good year.
On Saturday club member Chris (KK4WNQ) brought his 10 year old son Joseph to check out our event. We got Joseph to make a phone contact on our main phone station and then he worked our GOTA station with Chuck, AI4WU, as coach. He then worked more contacts from the GOTA station with his father as coach.
Having had a very successful Technician License class finish just two months before Field Day, we had several new Technicians come to try out our GOTA station. On Sunday Jay (KN4KXK) one of our newly licensed Technician class graduates, brought her granddaughter, 10 year old Trinity, with her to the event. After her grandmother made a contact on the GOTA station, Trinity gave it a try. She was a quick study and made several successful contacts first with Chris, KC4CMR as coach, and then with her grandmother.
Getting new people to experience HF contacts is a real pleasure. Seeing the smiles after successful QSOs is priceless. (Photos by WG4F)
