2018 ARRL Field Day

07/15/2018 | WB0ZWW

The Salted Hams Club decided to reunite after a few years hiatus. Jeff Dye,WD0GTY and I travelled to Anthony, KS home of club Member Jimmie Dye, WB0ZWW. We set up at Anthony Lake campsites #1 and 2.We operated 2A using club member Jimmie Dye's call (WB0ZWW). After set up 2 stations with OCFDs and a ICOM IC-7300 and a Kenwood TS590S we had issues with the network logging. After remedying this issue we were on the air. We were able to operate about 8 hours we had to close down due to heavy thunderstorms. Due to the high likelihood of flash flooding we evacuated the site for the night and returned the next day. The paved way in to the camp area was flooded due to water spilling over the dam spillway so we had to make an alternate dirt road trek to the Field Day site.  This was challenging but we made it there in time to take antennas down before the lightning returned. We spent time in the operations trailer disconnecting and storing equipment. On the way out to get some lunch one of our vehicles was not a match for the mud and got stuck. After a Good Samaritan pulled the vehicle from the mud we drove to the house for lunch. We were able to return between storms and finish packing gear and pulled the operations trailer out using 4-wheel drive. The weekend brought greater than 5 inches of rain to the area. Due to the storms and poor band conditions and storm static on the bands we were only able to make 220 QSOs. It was a fun time and we are planning a repeat for next year, hopefully minus the heavy rain.
