2018 ARRL 222 MHz and Up Distance Contest
I didn't have much time to operate but this was my first opportunity to use 1.2ghz and 902 setups, so I just had to go out.
I setup on Saturday on the Palisades Highpoint, W2/NJ-009, for a dual ARRL 222/SOTA experience, and as my time was even shorter then I had planned, the 1.2ghz gear never got unpacked but I did hammer away with 180w and a beam on 432 and a small 3w on 902. I was surprised to find that with about 2 hours operating on 432 basically non stop with a voice keyer I only drained about 10AH from the battey for the amp.
What a thrill to work my first ever 902 contacts! The compact FT-817/SG-Labs combo is really compact and is definately something I can consider for other SOTA work. I do have to fine tune the drive a bit and get a good mounting solution for the transverter on the mast.
Sunday I went back out for about 30 min to the same spot with only 1.2ghz and I didn't manage to work anyone but I did hear the K1FO beacon about 75 miles away and that was my first 1.2ghz experience, also thrilling.
Fartherst contact was K3TUF on 432 about 130 miles away.
