• New 24GHz system below the 5/10GHz system side mounted on the tower

01/21/2009 | K3TUF

I was just coming off the tower when the contest began so I ended up missing the
beginning of the contest but a new band was now installed which provided the
highlight of the contest.
With the expert assistance of W2PED we constructed a 24GHz box th... Read More

• Here is KK6MC's better side. The 432 Symmetrical Double Loop got tilted when we drove, so I had to straighten it out at my second stop in DM75. I never got it fixed quite right and it didn't seem to make much difference, so after a couple of tries to get it right at other stops I just left it slightly tilted. Other than poor aesthetics, it did no harm.

January is typically a time for retrospection. Last January, I scored less than 400 points. This year I nearly reached 3000. What makes the difference? Over the past year, I have roved in 9 contests: the 4 ARRL VHF/UHF contests, the CQ contest, two s... Read More

• A typical evening meal at the Bunkhouse

01/20/2009 | KB0HH

The conditions were pretty tough at the Bunkhouse this contest. Our furthest contact was a little over 200 miles. The 2 meter amp broke early, the 2 meter tower control broke. We used 100 watts on 2 meters and turned the tower by hand. We got prett... Read More

• My operating postion. Yaesu FT-857 for 6m and 70cm and the Icom 746PRO for 2m.

01/20/2009 | N3NKC

This contest gave me a chance to try out my new beams, a 4ele for 6m and a 7ele for 2m, and an amp for 2m. 2m proved to be the best band for me yielding 50 Q's. 6m wasn't so good, giving only half as many on 2, 24 Q's. Plus I ended up with S6 noise lev... Read More

• Left to right from atop Signal Peak, near John Wayne Airport, CA (DM13co): Tom, KI6GOA's stack of KU4B two meter loops; Pete, N6ZE; and Tom, KI6GOA/6. N6ZE/R briefly visited KI6GOA's QRP Portable Station operation on Sunday afternoon. 75 mile visibility prevailed & poor tropo conditions prevailed also! (Les Wiley photo)

01/20/2009 | N6ZE/ROVER

Pete, N6ZE, entered the January 2009 ARRL VHF Sweepstakes Contest as a Low Power Rover Class Entry. No, I did not set any scoring records, but I experienced a novel 2 day drive around Southern California. I only operated in 4 grids: DM-03, DM-04, DM-13... Read More

• K2QO and W2TAU in FN12gw

01/20/2009 | K2QO/R

This may be the first January contest where we did not work any DX. The usual surprise Caribbean QSO on 6m never happened. Neither did the usual contacts on 2M into ME. Propagation was very much in the tank, especially on the microwaves. Granted it was... Read More
