Worked only one station in my own grid (EM50). Heard a few others but no success. I heard W2GFF on CW twice during the contest with a pretty good signal both times. Using the UP/DOWN buttons on the 706's mic, I tried answering him, but no response. ... Read More

For SKN I assembled the station that I used in 1967. Christmas in 1966 when I was 14, brought me a used Heath Apache TX-1. How Santa got down the chimney, I will never know. I rebuilt it this December 2007. My Dad, Ben WB2WBZ (SK), was studying for... Read More

  • The path up to the shack winds through the woods for about 1/2 mile. It is a good aerobic exercise to make the trip while hauling a heavy exhaust pipe and a bunch of radio gear. You can see that I am wearing a pretty good path through the snow.

My QTH is located in Southern Maine, and known for its balmy temperatures in January, coupled with light breezes. Yeah right!! It was just plain COLD and WINDY on Sunday. I had very little time to devote to the January Contest, but wanted to get on at ... Read More

This was my third ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes and I spent some time to see in the past where I needed to improve.

My goal was to get a radio with a better receiver and add more bands. On 2m and 70cm I was using an Icom 706MKIIG and I ended up selling... Read More

I operated high power this year for the first time thanks to a new to me Alpha 78. What a difference QRO makes! Next year I plan to add a couple of receiving antennas as well. Although not as good as I hoped to do, it was still fun to work the gang on ... Read More

The extremely cold weather, a large snow storm, and the NFL Playoffs combined to makes this a slow and boring contest with poor to very poor conditions / activity. Lets move the January event back to the week before the Superbowl like it always was bef... Read More

....ARGH .... That is my first thought when I reflect back on this contest. Well below zero temps, low humidity and other unknown factors combined to produce terrible conditions. The cold temps, poor conditions and the football playoffs in turn created... Read More

  • Dual-polarization 4-yagi array at K1JT as it appeared in late October. Single yagis for 50, 222, and 432 MHz are atop the EME array. For the January contest, loopers for 903, 1296, and 2304 MHz were mounted above and below the horizontal member of the big H-frame.

An unusual operating style led to an all-time high (for me) of 61 multipliers on 2m, more than half of which came from random EME QSOs using JT65. My log includes DXCC prefixes W, VE, RU, UA9, S5, OH, DL, HA, G, OZ, YU, F, I, EA, OK, PJ4, and SV. Rov... Read More
