SB SPCL ARL ARLX059
ARLX059 Maine's top teacher

The 1996 Maine Teacher of the year is Robert L. Maurais, KC1IV.
Maurais, an industrial arts instructor at the Frank H. Harrison
Middle School in Yarmouth, was chosen for the honor on October 4.

Maurais, an ARRL-registered instructor and the 1992 ARRL Instructor
of the Year, was picked from 17 candidates recommended by local
nominating committees.

In 1994 Bob Maurais received the Walt Disney Company's ''American
Teacher of the Year'' award, and in 1993 he was the recipient of the
Maine State Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Award. His father is a
ham, too: Jerry Maurais, WA1BMG.

KC1IV's selection was made by Raymond H. Poulin Jr, Maine's deputy
commissioner of the Department of Education, and Peter Geiger, vice
chairman of the Maine State Board of Education.

A profile of Maurais, ''A Gift for Teaching,'' appeared in September
1995 QST.
