An Amateur Radio special event station Friday evening will add
interest to an astronomy demonstration for New Jersey middle school
students.

The occasion is a demonstration of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory,
in a flyover for the Liberty Science Center in Liberty Park, New
Jersey. The center expects some 600 students from the Summit Middle
School in Summit, New Jersey, who will camp there overnight. Center
officials invited members of the United Astronomy Club of New
Jersey, some of whom are also radio amateurs, according to Al
Tencza, NX2Q.

The station will be set up at the science center and will sign W2LS
(on loan from licensee Bill Savell), from 2200 October 13 to 0330
UTC on the 14th, on the 20, 15, and 10 meter bands on SSB as well as
locally on 6 and 2 meters. The demonstration also will be carried
live on local television Channel 13.

The airborne observatory is operated by the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration and is used to demonstrate the use of airborne
telescopes, in both the infrared and visible spectrum. Students are
able to command the telescopes from the ground.
