Western New York Section News
RVHFG and RDXA Joint Club Dinner
Congratulations to the Rochester VHF Group who celebrated it's 60th year in Amateur Radio at the recent RVHFG and RDXA joint dinner in April. A picture of the festivities is at the bottom of the web page.
Keith Freeberg N2BEL Educator of the Year Award
Peter Fournia W2SKY is the first recipient of the Keith Freeberg N2BEL Educator of the Year Atlantic Division Award, which was awarded at the banquet at the Rochester Hamfest.
Pete had worked very closely with Keith over the years in developing, organizing and teaching amateur radio topics to scores of people. This award is named after Keith Freeberg N2BEL who was very involved in amateur radio and amateur radio training in the Western New York Section. Keith had a unique ability to teach amateur radio to people of all ages. He had an affinity for working with young people and was very involved with one of the few Radio Coaches programs. It is very fitting that this award is dedicated to his memory and that the successful candidate demonstrate an ability to successfully train people in amateur radio. The emphasis is on quality of training and not pure number of people trained.
Congratulations to Pete W2SKY on this fine and well deserved achievement!
New WNY Section Traffic Manager
After many years of excellent service to the National Traffic System as the Western New York Section Traffic Manager, Bruce KA2GJV has decided pursue other interests as they say. Please send Bruce your thanks for his fine service as STM over so many years.
Effective immediately please send your traffic, PSHR and net reports to our new STM Doug AK2Z, who lives in Camden NY. Feel free to send me a copy as well, I appreciate the reports. Doug should be pretty easy to find, he checks into most if not all of the HF phone nets, as well as VHF nets such as OCTEN and CNYTN.
Please send along your congratulations and best wishes to Doug AK2Z as our new STM. He will do a fine job.
Field Day 2009: The Field Day locator for 2009 is up and running! FD Locator. Use the FD locator publicize your Field Day operation and help amateurs or those interested in Amateur Radio find a Field Day site near them. Please only list your FD if it open to the public. You can scroll around to find Field Day locations that have been entered into the map. You can enter your site by clicking on the "Add a Station" link located to the top right of the map.
Last year I travelled to 8 Field Day sites and had a lot of fun meeting all of you. I was planning to travel around for Field Day again this year but unfortunately graduation weekend falls on FD weekend, so travelling is out this year. I will probably operate some from home, and if time permits I'll try to visit a couple of the more local club's Field Day sites. I visited FD sites from Buffalo to Utica last year, a lot of driving but it was fun. I hope to hear your group on the air!
Hamfest Sponsors !
Generally most Western New York hamfests have well established dates and occur the same weekend from year to year. Please try your best not to choose a date that is already taken or a date you know another hamfest always uses, even if they have not announced their date yet. Conflicting hamfests draw attendees away from each other, and besides I can't go to both. If you are in doubt check with the other hamfest first if you think your date might conflict with them.

Local BPL News
For those of you faced with BPL, please take the time to talk to and write your town board and object to the interference that BPL causes and also write your state government officials as well as your congress person and senators. We may know that BPL isn't worth it, but that doesn't mean that your town board does.
