    Western New York Section News

The 2009 EmComm East emergency communications conference, sponsored by the Monroe County Amateur Radio Emergency Service was another successful event with about 100 people attending. There were several communications vans parked outside for viewing. The Winlink presentation and demonstration was excellent. If you were not there plan on attending next year. Or better yet volunteer to give a talk/presentation!

    Elmira Hamfest

The Elmira Hamfest was excellent as usual. A good turnout and flea market all the way back to the grand stand! A good group of vendors indoors too. The weather was great, I don't know how they do it but Elmira has the best luck with the weather, the weather always seems to be decent although a bit cold sometimes, but that's okay. A nice breakfast too. Hope you were there!

New Western New York Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator (ASEC)

Please welcome Western New York's new Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator Mike Little KB2CCD of Rome NY. Mike brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the WNY ARES organization. He will be organizing the WNY Section Wide Simulated Emergency Test (SET) this year. Please give Mike a warm welcome and your full support!

The Foundation For Amateur Radio is proud to announce the winners of the 2009 FAR Scholarships:

    Joe Knight Distinguished Service Award

Congratulations to Bill Thompson W2MTA of Newark Valley NY, a long time ARRL Section Manager here in Western New York, for receiving the Joe Knight Distinguished Service Award. The award is named after Joe Knight W5PDY (silent key) who was the New Mexico section manager. Joe was one of the best people you could ever know, and helped the ARRL train new section managers at the SM workshop in Newington. Congratulations to Bill W2MTA on receiving this prestigious award! Well deserved for Bill's many years of service to Amateur Radio.

    WNY Section Traffic Manager

After many years of excellent service to the National Traffic System as the Western New York Section Traffic Manager, Bruce KA2GJV has decided pursue other interests as they say. Please send Bruce your thanks for his fine service as STM over so many years.

Effective immediately please send your traffic, PSHR and net reports to our new STM Doug AK2Z, who lives in Camden NY. Feel free to send me a copy as well, I appreciate the reports. Doug should be pretty easy to find, he checks into most if not all of the HF phone nets, as well as VHF nets such as OCTEN and CNYTN.

Please send along your congratulations and best wishes to Doug AK2Z as our new STM. He will do a fine job.

Field Day 2009: The Field Day locator for 2009 is up and running! Start planning on 2010 FD! FD Locator. Use the FD locator publicize your Field Day operation and help amateurs or those interested in Amateur Radio find a Field Day site near them. Please only list your FD if it open to the public. You can scroll around to find Field Day locations that have been entered into the map. You can enter your site by clicking on the "Add a Station" link located to the top right of the map.

    Hamfest Sponsors !

Generally most Western New York hamfests have well established dates and occur the same weekend from year to year. Please try your best not to choose a date that is already taken or a date you know another hamfest always uses, even if they have not announced their date yet. Conflicting hamfests draw attendees away from each other, and besides I can't go to both. If you are in doubt check with the other hamfest first if you think your date might conflict with them.

Please sanction your hamfest with the ARRL at http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/hamfests/. You get a few door prizes and it helps you to avoid date conflicts with other WNY Hamfests.

    Emergency Communications Conference

Hope to see you at the next one!

    NYS QSO Party

16 Oct 2010 NYS QSO Party The date is yet to be confirmed, but start planning now. I had to fix my mag-mount just before this year's contest began, but I got on the road almost as planned. I worked 74 QSO's running 5 watts. I made it to 7 or 8 counties, including a few rare ones like Cayuga, Seneca and Schuyler. I was able to work the west coast and a few europeans too, so the 5 watts worked pretty well. Worked several europeans on 40 meters too! Not bad for QRP. Keep an eye out for next year's date and other information at: http://www.rdxa.com, or click here RDXA.

    Local BPL News

For those of you faced with BPL, please take the time to talk to and write your town board and object to the interference that BPL causes and also write your state government officials as well as your congress person and senators. We may know that BPL isn't worth it, but that doesn't mean that your town board does.
