I am using my yaesu- 857 for WinLink HF using the winmor virtual tnc in rms express. I am keeping the rf power at 30% like I would for a digital mode. Can I use more power since it is packet?

Winmor uses a multi-tone modulation that needs a linear transmitter to prevent splatting across the band. Thus, you need to reduce power like many other digital modes. Multi-tone modulation techniques are used to get better data rates.

I think that modem designers assume that hams like the convenience of going through the audio input of a radio, as opposed to a special FSK connection where you don't have to worry about the ALC characteristics of a transmitter.

But, perhaps the next generation of equipment will have a purely digital connection that allows the rig to talk back to the computer to negotiate the proper transmit power.
