Restoration of the original Rag Chewers' Club Award

Should the ARRL restore the original Rag Chewers' Club award? The R.C.C. award, one of the original awards offered by the ARRL, was one of the easiest, and therefore first, awards to be earned by ham operators, as the only requirement was to log or confirm a QSO with another amateur radio operator lasting at least 30-minutes in duration. The R.C.C. award was discontinued on Feb 12, 2004 along with the Friendship Award and the Old Timers Club Award, due to increased costs of making and sending them, as well as declining requests for them at that time. Now, things have changed. More and more folks are earning their FCC amateur radio licenses than ever before, resulting in increased membership and operating award requests as well. With computer logging and reporting providing faster and more accurate results; implementation would be nearly seamless, and handled mostly by LoTW and QSL card checkers. Certificates could easily be downloaded online and printed by the operator or, if preferred, printed by the ARRL. Of course, the cost would be the same as for any other award offered by the ARRL. All ARRL awards should be available to print online free of charge for members. Ease up on the greed for once. |

The expense is likely for verification & processing, more than the printed cert. I could see adding the awards (or award eligibility) automatically to our member profile pages. |

Why do we let bean counter and lawyers screw up the fun of amatuer radio? Rag chewers club was among the very first certificates/awards that I received as a novice back in the sp*rk gap daze. Now a daze unless the activity makes money for the bean counters AND DOES NOT expose the organization to ANY liability atall, it is scrubbed. Lettuce get real. Let Amateur Radio back into the decisions. |

First award I earned and still have it! With the lack of rag chewing on the bands, any incentive would be good. Been a ham since 1977 and still loving it. |

I vote YES - sorta. Ease up in the money!! ARRL Awards are way out of line cost wise in my view. Just make it avail download for members. |

Any award that is granted to an amateur radio operator is one that will always be remembered and can give a sense of pride in the hobby! |

An award that creates an incentive for two hams to actually share information other than call and signal report? How absolutely counter-culture to modern forms of social interaction! I vote yes, and please, make the award free or very close to free. |

When I reeived my Novice license in 1967 I was rock bound and stuck on 80, 40 and 15 meters cw only. The novice license was for one year and non-newable. It was a real thrill to get that RCC award because the other station had to certify your 30 min QSO. |
