I have an end fed running along the top of a wood stockade fence. I can get it about 10 feet higher but it will be about 4 feet from a metal guard rail. Is that too close?

The only way to find out is to give it a try. Sort of like choosing hot pepper sauce for food. One person's "too hot" is another's mild.

Typically you need a better antenna to do voice than
CW/data. WSJT and the digital mode FT8 are very popular for hams starting out on HF.

End fed question: My 65' end fed with 64:1 transformer works great on 40-20-17-15. I experimented by adding a short coil at the transformer end to see if I could get it to dip at 60m. To my surprise the coil changes nothing in that range. It dips at 6.5 mHz no matter how much coil I add. Any ideas why this is? Thanks, Scott kw4jm

Hi Scott,
You can't add a loading coil to either end of an fed antenna because both ends need to be high impedance for the transformer to work properly. Loading coils are typically placed where the impedance is low, not high.

I am purchasing a 5W QRP radio kit for 40m recently featured in the Feb 2022 QST review column. I am a newly licensed Tech that wants to learn and use CW for portable operation. Would an EFHW be the antenna for this?

Should I attempt a homebrew EFHW or just go with say, a Par EndFedz 40?

I fear the Par may not be long enough, designed for the 40m band and the CW segment I am allowed to operate in is the very lower end of the band. (i have used a Par EndFedz SWL to listen for years and love it).

Thank you, and 73
