I've spent a lot of time building vacuum tube based guitar amps over the past few years and I am curious if this type of hobby is also common within the Ham community - scratch building either replicas of older classic equipment, or building new designs with old technology. I am envisioning a day when it's difficult to tell where my guitar equipment stops and my radio equipment starts.

There are some folks who still build vintage equipment--here is a web page for fans of Ted Crosby's HBR series of receivers.

In the old days, most folks used separate receives and transmitters.

I looked into the HBR receivers after reading your post and that is exactly the kind of project I was looking for. A good deal more complex than any guitar amp though!

Thank you for the information.
