What exactly is contesting and how is it done?

Completely new to this and Ive heard of contesting but Ive never seen it done (I drive otr so hometime is limited). So Im curious about exactly what it is,how one goes about doing it and if there is specific equipment needed etc.

Go to http://www.contesting.com/ and you'll find several simple introductions to contesting.

They are a lot of fun. For the past few years, I only participate in 160 meter CW contests. (And I'm not very good at CW.)

There are many hams who, if they had their way, would ban most of them. :-)
