APRS Developer Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, has invited radio amateurs to take part in the annual Golden Packet Event on Saturday, July 18.

Begun in 2009, the event is a demonstration of the ability to relay text messages via the Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS®) along the length of the Appalachian Trail — all without the use of the Internet. All participants need is an APRS digipeating transceiver and an APRS hand-held transceiver for back-up messaging.
