Now in the ARRL Bookstore: Storm Spotting and Amateur Radio and ARRL’s PIC Programming for Beginners

05/04/2010

The ARRL is now taking orders for and shipping the two newest books in the ARRL Bookstore: Storm Spotting and Amateur Radio by ARRL Emergency Preparedness and Response Manager Mike Corey, W5MPC, and Victor Morris, AH6WX, and ARRL’s PIC Programming for Beginners by ARRL Education and Technology Coordinator Mark Spencer, WA8SME.

Storm Spotting and Amateur Radio is a resource for the Amateur Radio operator who volunteers as a trained storm spotter. This book includes information on resources, training, equipment, safety, storm spotter activation procedures, reportable weather criteria, developing a local storm spotter manual and recounts the experiences of storm spotters from around the country. It also provides some meteorological information about severe weather such as hurricanes, tornadoes, hail, floods, damaging wind and winter weather. Storm Spotting and Amateur Radio is available in the ARRL Bookstore -- located on the ARRL Web site -- for $22.95.

Microcontrollers control virtually everything we use in our everyday lives -- from microwave ovens, remote controls, heating thermostats, entertainment systems, clocks and even electronic tooth brushes. In recent years, radio amateurs have become interested in the extraordinary potential of microcontrollers as tools in everything from station accessories to transceivers. As a result, they’re eager to learn how to program these devices and actively put them to work. ARRL’s PIC Programming for Beginners is an introductory guide to understanding PIC design and development. Written in a building block approach, this book provides readers a strong foundation on the subject. As you explore the potential of these powerful devices, you’ll find that working with PICs is simple and educational -- and most importantly, fun. The included CD-Rom is filled with programming resources, supplementary reading, short video clips and other helpful data. For a limited time, ARRL members can purchase this book from the ARRL Bookstore -- located on the ARRL Web site -- for $39.95, a savings of $5 off the regular price of $44.95.

Both books will also be available for purchase in the ARRL EXPO at the Dayton Hamvention®.
