04/26/2013

See how far low power can take you at these QRP-related events.

The Dayton Hamvention® is coming up in just a few more weeks. Running in parallel with Hamvention is the Four Days In May (FDIM) event -- a ham radio convention with an emphasis on low-power operating (QRP) -- sponsored by QRP Amateur Radio Club International (QRPARCI). FDIM will take place May 16-19 at the Holiday Inn in Fairborn, Ohio.

FDIM will feature seminars and activities related to QRP operating. For example, the evening of Thursday, May 16 is their “Buildathon,” billed as “a group build of a small project that can be completed in one evening.” FDIM attendees will be transported by bus to Hamvention.

Meanwhile, according to the Minimalist QRP Group’s Facebook page, the group is sponsoring a contest for building a ham radio in an Altoids tin. The entry deadline is August 1, and details are on the group’s Facebook page. In a nutshell, anyone may submit photos and/or videos, along with schematics of their completed projects. Contact Todd Carpenter, N9YSQ, via e-mail for more information.

Until next time, keep on surfin’!
