IA Section News
November is here! Pass the gravy, please!
The Tenth Region SSB Traffic Net is
meeting seven days a week in a Cycle 1 & 2 format at
10:00am and 3:45pm Central Time on 7.275 MHZ. Their purpose is to
handle traffic to, from and within the Tenth Region. They need
operators from all sections to check-in and handle the traffic for
their respective section or bring traffic from their section for relay.
For more information, contact Jerry L Clark KC0VTT, 10th Region Traffic Net Manager at kc0vtt@arrl.net.
Ralph Wallio, W0RPK is a member of the ARRL 600m WD2XSH Experimental Group (see the group's web pages starting at http://www.500kc.com and ARRL QEX article, The ARRL 500-kHz Experiment:WD2XSH, via http://www.arrl.org/qex/2007/07/raab.pdf).
A significant goal of this experiment is to provide operating
experience toward a new Amateur Radio 600m band. The WD2XSH group
has been on-the-air since September 15, 2006 with 17 stations
accumulating over 30,000 hours of operating experience. As of
July, several new stations have been added to the FCC experimental
license including Ralph's station operating as WD2XSH/34. Ralph's
participation in this experiment includes testing of a low power
portable 600m station for ground-wave digital networking. This
station, operating south of Des Moines near Indianola, is ready to go
on-the-air for extensive digital error rate testing. See http://showcase.netins.net/web/wallio/WD2XSH-34.htm
for station photos. Ralph invites receive-only stations across the Iowa
Section to participate in these tests. Receiving stations will need to
be equipped with 500kHz receivers, antennas and PCs running digital
mode soundcard software such as DigiPan and MultiPSK. These stations
would be set up to receive his time-stamped digital beacon during
mid-day hours via ground-wave propagation. Received beacon data
files would be saved and sent to W0RPK as e-mail attachments for
analysis which would be shared with all receiving stations. Hams across
our Iowa Section are welcome to indicate interest in this 600m digital
ground-wave experiment via e-mail to Ralph Wallio, W0RPK, w0rpk@arrl.net
first to discuss receiving station equipment and software and then, as
stations are ready, schedule initial test transmissions.

I
invite you to visit a fairly new ham radio message board based in Iowa,
but open to the World Wide Web. It's the project of Scott
Schwendinger, NG0P, of Bernard, Iowa. On the site you'll find amateur
radio news and plenty of message boards for you to
share ideas and opinions with your fellow hams. You can talk
about
your latest antenna project, set up schedules, share humorous stories,
buy sell or trade equipment, and more. Registration is free and easy.
