FIELD DAY REMINDER. With the annual ARRL Field Day coming up in next month, it's time to get your group's Field Day site listed on the Field Day Locator, found by clicking here. So far there are 16 Kentucky Field Day groups with their locations posted. Don't miss this opportunity to let others know where your group will be operating on Field Day!

SECTION MANAGER FIELD DAY TOUR. My wife and I plan to again hit the road and visit Field Day sites across the Kentucky Section. It was a wonderful experience last year to see how each group conducts Field Day in their own unique way! Check back on this site for more photos from Field Day!

FIELD DAY BONUS POINTS. The Field Day rules packet offers a complete description of the bonus points available. If your group wants to score an easy 100 bonus points, then send either myself or the SEC an NTS-formatted message. The only requirment is that the message must leave the Field Day site by Amateur Radio RF. Once it leaves the site, it can then be forwarded in any mannger -- e-mail, telephone, or via one of the state nets, the KEN (3972.5 kHz, Monday @ 7:30 p.m. EDT), the KYN (3535 kHz daily at 8:30 p.m. EDT) and the KSN (3535 kHz nightly at 10 p.m. EDT). The Field Day rules require the message to contain specific information. The Field Day rules packet has complete details and examples of NTS format messages.

HUGH MORRIS, WB4GLG, SK. Bob Stephens, WA4CMO, communications supervisor for the KY Dept of Military Affairs, reports that Hugh Morris, WB4GLG, became a Silent Key at the age of 94 on June 1, 2009. Morris was a longtime Frankfort bureau chief for The Courier-Journal and was a member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Capital Amateur Radio Society in Frankort. Morris left the C-J in 1969, and worked for 10 years for the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission in Frankfort.

ERNIE MILLER, W9UQI, SK. Ernie Miller, W9UQI, of Corydon, Ind., became a Silent Key on June 7, 2009. Ernie is the brother of Joe Miller, K4DZM, of Lexington. A licensed Amateur Radio operator for 25 years, Ernie was a regular on 3960 kHz morning and evenings, and had many friends across the Kentucky Section.

CALL TO ACTION: SUPPORT H.R. 2160. John Meyers, NB4K, Great Lakes Division Legislative Action Chair, is asking all Kentucky Amateurs to write their congressman to request support for H.R. 2160, The Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009. If enacted, the bill would be a first step toward providing Amateur Radio operators some sort of protection from overly restrictive deeds and covenant. The bill does not automatically extend PRB-1 to include these "CC&R's," but its an important move in that direction. Amateurs are asked to e-mail or snail mail their Congressman to urge their support for H.R. 2160. Sample letters are available on the ARRL Web site. For more information, visit this story about H.R. 2160. U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie (2nd-KY) is already a cosponsor of the legislation. If we all do our part, we can help convince Kentucky legislators this is a worthwhile bill that needs their support.

HAMFEST REPORT. The Little Sandy Amateur Radio Club's first hamfest was Saturday, June 6th, and featured a good crowd and beautiful weather. The event had a location that was just off I-64, making it simple for even someone without a working GPS (like yours truly) to find. Congratuations to the Little Sandy club for a successful first time out, and I expect we'll see it grow in the future. Interested in having a hamfest? The ARRL has a planning guide to help you!

WELCOME NEWLY AFFILIATED CLUBS! The Anderson County Radio Club, the Little Sandy Amateur Radio Club and the Wilderness Outback DX Crew are the latest Kentucky radio clubs to earn ARRL affiliation! Over the past few weeks I have had the pleasure of meeting with members of all of these clubs, and it is gratifying to have them as part of the ARRL family. If your club is not yet affiliated, contact the Section Manager for more information. It's a great way to promote your club and help strengthen Amateur Radio nationwide.

CLUB AFFILIATION REMINDER. Attention all ARRL-affiliated radio clubs! Keep your affiliation current by updating your club records on the ARRL web site at least once every two years. Club affiliation doesn't expire, however if club records are not periodically updated your club listing will be moved to inactive status, and your club listing won't show up when someone conducts a search for Kentucky radio clubs. If your club has earned Special Service Club (SSC) status, that too must be renewed every two years. For questions about club affiliation, contact the SM or Affiliated Club Coordinator Jeanie Dalton, KB8QLC.

BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION: VOLUNTEER! The Kentucky Section is packed with talented and creative Amateurs whose skills are needed across the Commonwealth. Are you active in ARES? Does your county have an Emergency Coordinator? If not, would you like to serve in that capacity? Do you have an interest in giving back to our communities as a volunteer? Contact your county EC, District Emergency Coordinator or SEC Jim McDonnell, W2LTB for information on being a communications volunteer.

ACTIVITY REPORTS. Station Activity, Public Service or net reports are due to me by the 9th of each month. Your help in meeting this deadline is greatly appreciated in order that the KY Section web site is updated in a timely manner and the reports are submitted to ARRL HQ. The report forms on the KYHAM.NET web site are the easiest way for you to send in your reports. You may also send your reports directly to ky4z@arrl.org.
