October Section
Report
KY ARES CONFERENCE REPORT.The first Kenucky Section ARES Conference was held on Saturday, Oct. 17th, attracting Amateur Radio operators from all over the state. More than 80 individuals attended the conference, which was held in Bardstown. The conference agenda included a variety of topics, including HF operation, running a net, traffic handling basics, a panel discussion on digital communications and discussion on redistricting, FCC rules and much more. I would like to express my thanks to the Section leadership who supported the conference, including ASM Pat Spencer, KD4PWL, SEC Kenny Garrett, KG4HEV, ASEC Harvey, WA4NUD, ASM/ASEC Matt Tinker, AA4XA; Steve Morgan, W4HNO; and to all those who volunteered to share their knowledge by offering presentations and information. This includes Matt Tinker, AA4XA (HF operation); Glenn Foley, KO4OL (traffic handling); ASM Steve Morgan, W4NHO, D5 DEC Joe Kendall, KE4JYC and D9 DEC Scott Jacobs (digital panel discussion); Frank Wright and the Nelson County ARES group for providing tours of their mobile command posts, and to ASEC Harvey Lawrence, WA4NUD, for the presentation on using a surplus ambulance for a mobile command post. And a special "thank you" to all of those who took time out of their busy weekend to make the trek to the conference; it was your interest and participation that made the event a true success! KY QSO PARTY. The 2009 Kentucky QSO Party, sponsored by the Western Kentucky DX Association, will run from 1400Z on Saturday, Nov.14 to 0200Z on Sunday, Nov.15. Your help is needed in order to put as many of Kentucky's 120 counties on the air as possible! For details and rules, visit the WKDXA web site at www.wkdxa.com. ARES REDISTRICTING DONE. As announced last week via e-mail and at the KY ARES Conference on Saturday, Oct. 17th, the ARES districts in Kentucky will remain the same with one exception. Franklin County, District 14, will no longer be a separate District. It will be moved into District 6. SEC Kenny Garrett, KG4HEV and myself accepted the recommendation of the select committee that was asked to examine ARES districts. After evaluating the committee's recommendations, the SEC and I believed the best move at present was to allow ARES districts to remain as they are. An additional result of the discussions of the redistriction committee was the decision by the SEC to add additional Assistant SECs to cover all of the state. Copies of the new map were distributed at the ARES Conference and will be available for download on the KYHAM web site. HELP WANTED. Fayette County EC Tom Mansfield, KG4TND of Lexington is looking for volunteers for a couple of upcoming events. Tom is looking for volunteers who can help in Fayette County with the CSEPP exercise that takes place during the day on Wednesday, Oct. 28th. Finding volunteers who can be available for this daytime exercise is necessary to insure adquate staffing so hams can be located all critical locations. Tom is also looking for volunteers who can assist Fayette County ARES for a public service event on Saturday, Oct. 31st. Fayette ARES has been invited to assist the 2009 Harvest Trail Ride fundraiser with safety and logistics communications. The trail ride is a fundraiser that helps support Central Kentucky Riding For Hope, a program that provides therapeutic riding and equine-related activites to individuals with special needs. The trail ride takes place at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. For more information, contact Tom at kg4tnd@arrl.net or 859-351-7113. CHEMICAL STOCKPILE EXERCISE IS OCT. 28. The Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program (CSEPP) exercise is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time. Amateurs in the counties that surround Madison County will be taking part, and message traffic via Amateur Radio will be a part of the exercise. More information will be coming forth via the KYHAM web site and the KYHAM e-mail list. NEW DEC. ASEC Harvey Lawrence, WA4NUD, is currently serving as temporary DEC in District 2. Individuals interested in public service in KY ARES who live in D2 are invited to contact Harvey at wa4nud@pepb.net. MADISON COUNTY WX SPOTTER TRAINING. Many will remember him as the voice of "Slippery Rock, USA", and as a member of the regular daily ham coffee klatch in Whitley City. (Thanks to Shawn Cowden, KG4KBU). NZ8K SK. Vernon Stanfill, NZ8K became a Silent Key on Oct. 10, 2009. Vern lived in Fort Gay, West Va., but was well known to hams throughout Eastern Kentucky. Three organizations -- the Owensboro Amateur Radio Club, Daviess County ARES and Henderson County ARES provided support for Senior Day at the Town Square Mall in Owensboro on Sept. 24th. OARC members W4NHO, AJ4EX, KI4SQH, AA4RL and W4RXCX helped provide manpower along with KY SEC Kenny Garrett, KG4HEV and WE4G from Hancock Co. LINCOLN COUNTY ARES. Lincoln County ARES will hold its next meeting on Nov. 17th at the Lincoln County EOC office. The group will then meet the third Tuesday of every month. Additionally, the Lincoln County ARES Net is set for 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays using the 146.79 repeater (tone 79.9). All are welcome to participate. SUPPORT KYHAM.NET. For many years, the KYHAM.net web site has been the resource for all things in Kentucky related to Amateur Radio. The KYHAM e-mail list is one of the valuable services that is free and an important resource for knowing what is going on in the Commonwealth. Signing up is simple and easy. Pat Spencer, KD4PWL, runs a tight ship, and you won't be receiving a lot of spam or junk mail. Visit KYHAM.net and click on the "Listserv" link on the lefthand menu. BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION: VOLUNTEER! The Kentucky Section is packed with talented and creative Amateurs whose skills are needed across the Commonwealth. Are you active in ARES? Does your county have an Emergency Coordinator? If not, would you like to serve in that capacity? Do you have an interest in giving back to our communities as a volunteer? Contact your county EC, District Emergency Coordinator or SEC Kenny Garrett, KG4HEV for information on being a communications volunteer. ACTIVITY REPORTS. Station Activity, Public Service or net reports are due to me by the 9th of each month. Your help in meeting this deadline is greatly appreciated in order that the KY Section web site is updated in a timely manner and the reports are submitted to ARRL HQ. The report forms on the KYHAM.NET web site are the easiest way for you to send in your reports (click here for the KYHAM reports page). You may also send your reports directly to ky4z@arrl.org. |

This is being done to keep from interferring with 2 other nets, one at 2000 hrs the other at 2100 hrs.
