    October Section Report

KEN VS. PROPAGATION. The Kentucky Emergency Net is still meeting at 7:30 Eastern/6:30 Central time on 3972.5. The winter band conditions on 75 meters often mean that stations in East and West Kentucky can't copy one another, but a station in Northern Ohio can copy both. If you can't hear the net, but hear others looking for the net, you can start the net on your own and send your report on to KY4Z stating the number of check-ins and traffic passed (if any).

KYN TIME CHANGE. The Kentucky CW Net (KYN) is moving its time up one-half hour to 8 p.m. daily on 3535 kHz. Net Manager John Farler, K4AVX reports the time was changed to try to conduct the net before the propagation goes "long."

KSN QRT NOV. 30. The long run of the Kentucky Slow CW Net, (KSN) is coming to a close, reports Net Manager Glenn Foley, KO4OL. Right now only two stations are serving as net control, Glenn and Willis Asher, AD4DX. The KSN was the training ground for numerous CW operators and traffic handlers (the SM included). An indirect recipient of KSN training was well-known QST youth contributing editor Andrea Hartlage, KG4IUM of Grayson, Ga. KO4OL writes that "Andrea received her training from KG4FXG, who received his training from KSN." Glenn adds his special thanks to Willis Asher, AD4DX for his help as NCS, and to all those who have been part of the KSN. Many thanks to Glenn and all the rest who have mentored so many hams across Kentucky and beyond on CW traffic handling. Please join myself and the KSN "regulars" for the last session of KSN on Monday, Nov. 30 at 10 pm Eastern on 3535 kHz.

SKYWARN RECOGNITION DAY. Saturday Dec. 5th is Skywarn Recognition Day. The 11th annual event runs from 0000-2400 UTC. So far, the Paducah NWS office will be active using the callsign W4P operating 80-2 meters SSB and FM, as well as Echolink. To view the national Skywarn web page, visit http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/hamradio/

PR-101 GRADUATE. Terry, N4EWW, who is Bath County EC and a PIO, recently passed the ARRL's public relations course, PR-101. Congrats, Terry!

LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER. John Hudson, KO4XJ, president of the Paducah ARA, reports that at a recent VE test session a father-daughter both passed their tests, Brett Chenier, KJ4OHM -- who passed his Technician exam a couple of months ago -- upgraded to General. His daughter, Amelia Chenier, KJ4QJI, passed her Technician exam the day before her 11th birthday. KO4XJ reports Amelia is a straight-A student at Ballard County, and thanks to her excellent work in school, is now the proud owner of a new HT. "I am sure she is our youngest member ever in the Paducah Amateur radio club, and I'm sure she's the only grade-schooler in West Kentucky with an HT on her side today at school."

CONGRATS TO KI4BOQ. Congratulations to Johnson Central High School senior Chris Castle, KI4BOQ, who was selected to sing in the Kentucky All-State Choir in Louisville. Chris is the first male student in JCHS history to make All-State three years in a row.

BARS ON FACEBOOK. Club president Buddy Sohl, KC4WQ, reports that members, former members and fans of the Bullitt Amateur Radio Society who use Facebook can now the club on Facebook. The social networking site is home to a growing number of Kentucky Amateur Radio operators and their clubs. It's not RF, but its a neat way to reconnect with old friends.

CLUB ELECTIONS. The Amateur Radio Community Service club in Paintsville recently held election of officers. The officers include President Clyde DeRossett, KI4CKT; Vice-President Bill Callihan KJ4FYR; Secretary Ron Castle KI4NM; Treasurer Curtis Meade KY4CM; Public Information Ron Castle KI4NM. The club VE testing team includes Ken Robinson K4KBR; Curtis Meade KY4CM; Clyde DeRossett KI4CKT; Jim Pickle AE4JS; Ralph Tuley KB9ORD; Richard Helton KF4UEH. The ARCS Board of Directors include Jim Pickle AE4JS; Don Castle KI4NL; and Bob Dixon KJ4FYQ.

ERNEST "JACK" JACKSON JR, KD4JQD SK. Ernest "Jack" Jackson Jr., KD4JQD, became a Silent Key on Friday, Oct. 30th. Jack was well-known on 3960 and also other places on the 75-meter band, and was heard frequenctly on 2-meter FM. He was an active member of the ROMEO group (Retired Old Men Eating Out) in Louisville, and he will be missed.

SUPPORT KYHAM.NET. For many years, the KYHAM.net web site has been the resource for all things in Kentucky related to Amateur Radio. The KYHAM e-mail list is one of the valuable services that is free and an important resource for knowing what is going on in the Commonwealth. Signing up is simple and easy. Pat Spencer, KD4PWL, runs a tight ship, and you won't be receiving a lot of spam or junk mail. Visit KYHAM.net and click on the "Listserv" link on the lefthand menu.

BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION: VOLUNTEER! The Kentucky Section is packed with talented and creative Amateurs whose skills are needed across the Commonwealth. Are you active in ARES? Does your county have an Emergency Coordinator? If not, would you like to serve in that capacity? Do you have an interest in giving back to our communities as a volunteer? Contact your county EC, District Emergency Coordinator or SEC Kenny Garrett, KG4HEV for information on being a communications volunteer.

ACTIVITY REPORTS. Station Activity, Public Service or net reports are due to me by the 9th of each month. Your help in meeting this deadline is greatly appreciated in order that the KY Section web site is updated in a timely manner and the reports are submitted to ARRL HQ. The report forms on the KYHAM.NET web site are the easiest way for you to send in your reports (click here for the KYHAM reports page). You may also send your reports directly to ky4z@arrl.org.
