    NOVEMBER 2009 MISSOURI SECTION NEWS

    DALE BAGLEY, KØKY MO SM

November brings the season of Thanksgiving. I am very thankful to all the volunteers that make the ARRL Missouri Section programs possible. I am always impressed by the dedication and talent that Amateurs provide in service to their Communities, State and the Amateur Radio Service. If you look at the Missouri Traffic System, the ARES program, the Affiliated Club program, the Official Observer program, the Technical Specialist program, and the Public Information program, you will see outstanding accomplishments in all areas. The effort of course doesn't stop there because we also have the B.E.A.R.S. who sponsor the MO QSO Party each year, the MVDXCC that sponsor the Zero QSL Bureau, the Volunteer Examiners that keep adding to the ranks of Amateur Radio, the on going volunteer effort of those promoting the 2 meter/ 6 meter packet network for Missouri, and all the others that give so much to promote and improve Amateur Radio in our state. To be perfectly honest I didn't list any names, because there would be too many and I was concerned that I might leave someone out by accident.

The Crisis Communications Conference hosted by the State Emergency Management Agency of Missouri was held at the Embassy Suites in St. Charles, MO. A highlight of the Conference were the presentations of Dennis Dura, K2DCD, the ARRL Emergency Communications Director and Roger Volk, KØGOB, of St. Louis Amateur Radio Emergency Group. They did an excellent job presenting information about the role of Amateur Radio to the Emergency Management personnel that attended the conference. It was great to see all of the ARES representation at the Conference and to visit with everyone about their efforts to promote the inclusion Amateur Radio Communications as part of the emergency planning of hospitals, State agencies and volunteer organizations. This was a well attended and important opportunity for all those interested in Emergency Communications to share and learn.

    OCTOBER HAMFEST 2009 REPORT

Congratulations to Donna Quick and the hard working members of the Southside ARC for their efforts this year. The South-Side Amateur Radio Club Hamfest in Grandview, MO was outstanding this year with lots of vendors and an increase in attendance. One of the highlights was the presentation of the Herb Brier, W9CD Amateur Radio Instructor of the Year Award to Brian Short, KCØBS. Brian lives on the Kansas side of Kansas City, but has been involved in licensing over 500 new amateur radio operators in the past two and one half years.

Again this year, the Saint Louis Amateur Radio Club held their Halloween Hamfest on at the Kirkwood Community Center in Kirkwood, MO. This year's event had a big increase in attendance and in vendor participation. All the SLARC membership deserve a big pat on the back for a job well done. The VE testing session was very successful with 16 out of 17 applicants earning a license or upgrade. It was great to talk to all those that stopped by the ARRL table and shared their thoughts.

    2010 HAMFEST JANUARY

The next Hamfests that will be held in the Missouri Section will be in January 2010. The Ozark Mountain Radio Group will be sponsoring their annual Ozark Mountain Hamfest January 9th, 2010 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Springfield, MO. The Ozark Mountain Radio Group Hamfest is one of the most interactive Hamfest I've seen. At past Hamfests there has been all kinds of demonstrations of digital, HF, and emergency communications equipment. They have VE testing at the Hamfest. and they also sponsor a D-Star repeater. For more information contact Connie Ballantyne, KB0ZSG c/o Ozark Mountain Amateur Radio Group PO Box 247
Walnut Grove, MO 65770-0247 Phone: 417-830-0336 Email: connielb05@aol.com

The St. Louis & Suburban Radio Club Winterfest is probably the largest Hamfest sponsored by a Missouri Section Amateur Radio Club. The Winterfest will be held January 30th, 2010 in Collinsville, IL at the Gateway Convention Center. For more information about tables, tickets and vendor participation, you need to contact Bill Coby, KB0MWG, PO Box 2233 St. Louis, MO 63139 Phone: 314-504-1104 Email: bcoby@sbcglobal.net or check out the SLSRC website at http://slsrc.org

AFFILIATED CLUB NEWS KEITH HAYE, WEØG, ACC

The Callaway Amateur Radio League, is justly proud of one of their long time members accomplishments. Dick White, KSØM, has received a "Certificate of Merit" in recognition of winning the CQ Magazine 2008 WORLD-WIDE DX Contest - CW Mode in the 10th Call Area on 20 meters. He ranked #13 in North America and #9th in the United States. Not bad for an experienced CW operator that just had his 83rd Birthday. Dick already has 10 first place certificates and 2 second place certificates for the Missouri Section only. Rumor has it that he will be framing this certificate.

The Heart of America Radio Club had an interesting program at a recent meeting. Phil Anderson, WØXI discussed the building of Crystal Radio kits and then the members built a crystal radio at the meeting. Phil's program also included an explanation of the operation of ultrasonic receivers and transceivers. He explained how ultrasonic transceivers (unit inside of headphones) can make it possible to communicate with CW using ultrasonic frequencies. Sounded like a really fun activity for a Amateur Radio Club meeting.

The Mid-MO Amateur Radio Club and the Warrensburg Area Amateur Radio Club, combined forces again this year and sponsored the Halloween Special Operating Event in Frankenstein, MO on October 31st. Many don't know that Missouri is home to the only town in the United States named Frankenstein. Its located about 30 minutes east of Jefferson City. Keith Haye, WEØG, announced that The Warrensburg Area ARC will confirm contacts with a commemorative Halloween QSL card will be available to those making contact with Special Event Station NØF (November Zero Frankenstein. The Mid-MO ARC will qsl using Special Event Call WØO (Whiskey Zero Oscar). There was an very interesting article in the Linn, MO newspaper about the event and featured comments by Mike Miller, WAØZOG, Nancie McAnaugh, KDØDDY, and Kent Trimble, K9ZTV.

Jerry Dwyer, NF9L, is the organizer behind the Technology Net that is on the Raytown Amateur Radio Club repeater at 8:00 pm Central time U.S. on Fridays, on 145.170(-) no PL tone. Or listen from anywhere on the Internet at these location: Echolink - K0GQ-R node 403841 Echolink - *MISSOURI* conference server node 452514 Echolink - *NV-GATE* conference server node 152566 IRPL - Western Reflector Ch 8 node 9258 The subject for a recent Technology Net was "ARRL VHF QSO Party - Adventure from an Arkansas Mountain" Sept/2009, presented by Jacque Dupuy (JD) NØIRS. JD is a real authority on every aspect of VHF and above, SSB Ham Radio. Being the founder of the "KC VHF Grid Bandits" club, he spends most of his Ham radio time, breaking in a new rig or trying a new antenna in search of DX contacts at incredible distances. He explained how well they did in the contest and showed his videos from the recent VHF QSO Party and his adventure on an Arkansas Mountain top.
