New Mexico Section News for October, 2009
***Update on the "Route 66 On The Air" - The New Mexico Special Event Station W6H did well over 3000 contacts during the ten days of the contest.
*** The High Plains Drifters will conduct a VEC Testing session on Nov. 21, 2009 starting at 9 AM. Walk-ins are welcome. Session will be held at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, 501 Elizabeth St. SE in Albuquerque. Contact Darryl Clutter, NX5W, at 505-286-1672 or nx5w@arrl.net.
*** One of our hams in Dona Ana county, Chad Kinser - KF4ESM - was in a bad motorcycle accident earlier this month. He was in very serious condition for some time but is now making progress in his recovery. Visitors are limited so check first. Chad is at Advanced Care in room 673. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chad, his wife and family. Thanks for the updates Dave - W7DZG.
***Mesilla Valley ARC had a Tech Class and testing with a 90% pass rate. Thanks to Evan , KE5ZRZ.
***Kelly Tucker, KE5OXN, and the Torrance County ARES group provided the communications and coordination for a flu shot effort at the Estancia High School. More than 200 Seasonal and H1N1 vaccinations were dispensed. This is another great example of the community services amateur radio performs. Thanks to Joe Keefe, N0JCX for the info.
***Seth Price, N3MRA, ran a ham class in Socorro in preparation for the VEC testing at the Socorro Hamfest. I have not received any info on his success but this is another example of a young ham helping to energize the hobby. Great job Seth.
***The Roswell Hamfest was a big success even though it rained all morning. Hams are a sturdy lot. I look forward to sunshine next year.
***The Socorro Hamfest was also a tremendous success and there was sunshine! The ARRL forum was very lively with lots of good comments about the 97.113 concerns. Don Scott suggested a Section wide working committee to discuss and respond to ARRL Headquarters. The ARES/RACES meeting was energetic, with lots of good info. The 97.113 topic was of prime concern. A plaque was presented to Alf Lindsay, W5ALL, for his outstanding work as ARES DEC and RO for Chaves County. Alf resigned that position as of the 15th of the month. The new DEC for Chaves County , Rich Brown - KE5IAY, was given his appointment certificate. Bill Kauffman, W5YEJ, was also given a plaque in thanks for his many years of service to the Section as past SEC and ASEC. Bill was not present at the meeting because he was doing his certification for Search and Rescue.
***The New Mexico Amateur Radio Alliance, NMARA, once again had a booth at the ABQ Home & Lifestyle show. NMARA is a permanent committee of the Upper Rio FM Society and provides a professional 10 x 10 booth to help promote ham-radio activities. The booth is available to any amateur radio organization in the state. While attendance was light for the show the radio booth was very busy. Thanks to Larry Goga, AE5CZ, and Bill Ripley, KY5Q, for organizing and ramroding this event.
***The High Desert ARC hosted a special event station, N5B, at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This was their fourth year to have a Special Events Station at the balloon fiesta. Through the efforts of Frank Warren, AB5WJ, the station was manned for the entire fiesta. This is excellent exposure for Amateur Radio. Way to go High Desert!
***October 18, 2009 - The Duke City Marathon was held. Albuquerque area amateurs have supported this event for more that 20 years. As usual the ham community supported this event. Thanks to Ed Ricco, N5LI for his efforts in coordinating all of our local public service events.
Upcoming events:
***The ARRL has approved the Hamfest request of the 146.58 Simplex Group. This will be held January 30, 2010 in Albuquerque. Gary Horlbeck, KH6JTM, and the group always put on a great tailgate.
Many of our clubs in the Section are having elections of officers. Don't let someone else do the job that you could do. Support your club, be an active member and contribute.
*** Darryl Clutter, NX5W, will hold another testing session on Saturday, November 21st, 2009, 0900 until 1200 (N5YI). All testing will be in the "computer lab" at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, 501 Elizabeth St SE, Albuquerque, NM. Darryl and his group of VEs do an outstanding job of testing and not enough thanks are given to them for their efforts. Next time you see Darryl let him know that you appreciate their efforts. Darryl can be contacted at nx5w@comcast.net.
***ARRL is currently reviewing the Amateur Radio Emergency Communications program. The League is looking at the requirements that the Department of Homeland Security is putting in place for approved courses. The League willrevise the Level 3 course to become a new Advanced Emergency Communications course, which will replace both the current Level 2 and Level 3 courses. Plans are to release the new course in the last quarter of 2009. Students who have taken the Level 2 course will need to have the new "Advanced" course to complete the current Amateur Radio Emergency Communications training program. Those who have completed the Level 1 course may progress directly to the "Advanced" course when available. For the time being, the Basic Level 1 course will continue to be offered in its current format The training program mandate is to provide the training ham radio communicators need to be prepared to serve their communities in time of communications emergencies.
*** ARRL Continuing Education Courses are available to the membership. Many different subjects are available. For registration information go to the CCE Course Listing page <http://www.arrl.org/cep/student> or contact the Continuing Education Program Coordinator <cce@arrl.org>.
***If you live in the southern part of the state you may want to get on Larry Springsteen's list. Larry gives a synopsis of ham activities in the southern New Mexico and El Paso areas. Larry's e-mail is wb8lbz@earthlink.net

Several club newsletters are sent to me and I greatly appreciate receiving them. I have also received information from people for inclusion in the newsletter. Be sure to give me all of the information. Don't assume I know names, calls, dates and locations. They are all important. This is your Section and what you do is important. If your club does not have a PIO please get one and let me know the important things your club is doing. Have a great month.
