Ohio Section News for February, 2010
Just a quick note on the efforts to get Ohio PRB-1 on it's way in the Ohio Statehouse. As you may recall a short time back I informed you of the second reading and proponent testimonies for House Bill 212. Just this morning (Feb 2, 2010), Senate Bill 218, which is the sister Bill for HB 212 has it's first reading and Sponsor Testimony by the bill originators Sen. Tim Shaffer (R- Ohio District 31), and Sen. Tom Sawyer (D - Ohio District 28). I was present in the hearing room this morning when both Gentlemen spoke highly of the valuable resource of Amateur Radio. We look for a second reading (with proponent testimony) in the next several weeks.
State Government Liaison Nick Pittner, K8NAP is working hard to keep the Ohio Section cabinet informed of the movement of these very important Bill within the Statehouse. As news develops, I will keep the Section informed.
The Mansfield Mid-Winter Hamfest and Computer show will be here before we know it. And yes Husbands, it falls on Valentine's Day this year. Here's a gift hint... a coil of RG-8X does NOT make a good gift for the XYL!!
While at the Hamfest, be sure to attend the ARRL, OSSBN, and Ohio MARS meetings and forums. There you will be able to keep up on the latest activities around the Section. I will be there, so be sure to stop by the ARRL table and say hi!
Looking for a program to hold during your club meetings? Have an ARRL night. Any member of the Ohio Section cabinet is willing and able to come speak at your function. For contact information, visit the Ohio Section website (www.arrlohio.org).
Now, here's Interim Scott Yonally, N8SY with the Affiliated Club Coordinators report, filling in for Joanne Solak, KJ3O. Who is doing much better, and sends her warmest regards.

------------- ACC Report for February 2010 ------------
Wow.. The month of January has passed so quickly that it just seems like a blur. Just a quick update on Joanne and Larry. They are doing fine and they are working very diligently to get their daily lives back together. Please keep them in your daily prayers.
The New Year is here and so are hamfests. Even though it's freezing cold outside the deals are hot and so is the camaraderie. That's one of the most unique things about Amateurs, we love to get together and tell the tales of the rare one that got away and I have to say it, we love to eat. Got a food joint with a booth, I'll show you a ham gathering point. A number of clubs in the state have now started breakfast get-togethers. The Mansfield club has a breakfast during the weekday for the old timers and those working on odd shifts and it's been so popular that they even started one for the Saturday morning crowd as well!
The Delaware County (DELARA) club had a club meeting on the road this last month. They took in the sights at KC8ZUL's ham shack. He has an impressive collection of "Operational Boat Anchors" that he shared with those who attended.
The Lake Erie (LEARA) club is getting ready all set to move their 76 repeater to another location. They have a whole host of activities going on almost every night.
From the Buckeye Burr (The Buckeye Belles) newsletter came something that really hit home. I was reading a story on their front page and noticed a name from my past.. Dave Prestel, W8AJR. He moved to Maryland quite a few years ago and I haven't heard anything about him since. Now those of you older hams in Northern Ohio will most likely remember Dave as that he held a number of leadership positions in the Cleveland area. What you may not have known is that Dave was actually from the Mansfield area. Anyway, I found it interesting that he is alive, well and he's now the FAR Scholarship Chairperson. Even in Maryland, Dave has a presence.
Do you know about the FAR Scholarship program? If you don't and want to know more, write to my friend, Dave Prestel, W8AJR at P.O. Box 911, Columbia, MD 21044.
Remember to volunteer to help out wherever you can in your Club. Club leaders need volunteers to achieve the ultimate goals set for their club. And don't forget to pay your membership dues. Support your Club. AND, while you are at it, pay your ARRL dues through your club!
The Mount Vernon club has had a VHF repeater donated to them. They are looking to set it up as a younger person's repeater where the younger crowd can get together for a meeting place. They can also use this extra repeater in case of an emergency as a backup or even a place to run extra traffic when it gets heavy.
The Central Ohio Radio Club (CORC) is celebrating it's 40th birthday this year. We congratulate them on their success and wish them a happy 40 more years.
New Club Officers, and those who remained in office, make sure you file the ANNUAL REPORT FORM as soon after your first meeting of the year as possible. There are many times myself or the ARRL HQ would need to notify your club of some information pertaining to your membership, without club updates, this is next to impossible. In this day and age of the internet, and the many ARRL forms available online. There is just no excuse not to file this particular form.
I've noticed reading through a great deal of newsletters that many of our clubs around the state are already starting to make plans for Field Day. Field Day this year will be June 26th and 27th. A lot of clubs make this weekend a fun, family event with a picnic or two for all. Field Day is designed to be just that, fun.. but don't forget it has a serious side too. It's not just picnics, and points, it's main function is to show the general public what we are all about, communications. No if's, and's or but's about it. We are a service that provides communications when all else fails!
And finally from the Toledo Mobile Radio Club.. Don't forget to check-in to the Special Events Station February 6th - 7th for Thomas Edison. The Thomas Edison Memorial Radio Club will be sponsoring the 4th annual Special Events Station at the Milan Historical Museum in Milan, Ohio. Club Station NI8G will be on the air and operating from 10am to 4pm these two days. This event is in celebration to Thomas Edison's birthday, February 11, 1847. Want more information? Contact Jack Hubbard at 419-706-1308, or email at: ni8l@yahoo.com for additional information.
