Hello Oklahoma Section!
May was a great month for Amateur Radio in the Oklahoma Section.
Amateur Radio Week Proclaimed
Governor Brad Henry proclaimed the week of June 22nd through June 28th Amateur Radio Week. Wow, this is a really big deal for the section. The proclamation recognizes Amateur Radio and the American Radio Relay League for all of the service we provide in the state of Oklahoma. In the proclamation, the Governor encourages the public and governmental entities to be appreciative of the support, offered by Amateur Radio, during times of emergency. We should all be proud this recognition and all that we have accomplished, and will accomplish in the future. Thanks to Kevin O'Dell-N0IRW, OK Section Public Information Coordinator, in providing a splendid opportunity for endorsement of Amateur Radio by the Executive branch of state government. Thanks also to John Thomason, WB5SYT, West Gulf Division Vice-Director for his presence and encouragement in our visit to the capitol.
EMS Week - A Day at the Capitol
Emergency Medical Services Week was also celebrated by "A Day at the Capitol" for EMS personnel form the state. Our own Eddie Manley, K5EMS, was present at the festivities. Eddie is employed by the Oklahoma Health Department and represents the section as State Government Liaison (SGL). In his day to day job he is in contact with Emergency Medical and Emergency Management leadership. In his unique position in state government Eddie is in a great position, and has done a great job, of extolling the virtues of Amateur Radio in emergency situations. Keep up the good work Eddie.
Adieu - Dave Land, KD5FX
A going a way party was hosted by Kay County ARC honoring Dave Land KD5FX, a long time club member in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Mayor Homer Nicholson was present at the ceremonies a presented a proclamation honoring Dave, citing his many years of community service. Paula Cane, KD5JOC, Ponca City Emergency Manager, spoke of Dave's work in support of Amateur Radio and Emergency Management in the community. Dave will be missed, but hopefully we'll hear him on the air from his new home in Texas. Good luck with the Isotron Dave.
DARA Supports Magnolia Festival Bicycle Ride
The Durant Amateur Repeater Association provided the communications for a scenic bicycle ride through the rolling country side of Bryan and Johnston Counties in southeastern Oklahoma, benefiting the charities and projects of the Rotary Club of Durant. The ride was held in conjunction with the Durant Magnolia Festival. Riders selected a tour of 12, 24, 40 or 60 miles. Rest stops were provided every 10 miles with water, fruit, facilities and radio communication provided by DARA members. Thanks to the following DARA Members for their participation: George Colliers, W5GME; Ken Eppler, AB5CC; Joe White, K5BQG; David Booth, K5YM; Deena Williams, KF5AMV and Jack Skinner, KB5KKT: Bill Stanford, NR5X; Jim Harmon, K5BNK; Dewayne Haun, N0WDH; Jacob Eppler, KE5PPT.
