    Hot Springs ARC

Our annual club picnic was a good time for all 35 people that attended. Even though we had to move it inside, everyone enjoyed the time of food and fellowship. A large storage bin was purchased to use on our communications trailer. This will be great for cables and accessories. Thanks to Carl, W9LEQ, and Phil, WØFUI, for taking care of this project. A building committee has been formed to look at ideas for upgrading our club shack and making best use of our building fund. There were 18 in attendance at our annual business meeting. A large number of folks paid their dues and we are well on our way to reaching last year's membership total. Congratulations to Billy, KCØWEU, on winning the 2010 ARRL Handbook that was given away at the annual meeting. Club officers elected for next year are as follows: President - Tim Anderson, VP - Phil Knapp, Secretary - Penny Hanna, Treasurer - Pam Anderson, Board Members - John Davis, Carl Anderson and Lon Seaboldt.

    Hub City ARC (Aberdeen)

The Hub ARC met on 14 Sept. Our Sunday Night Net will start up again and meet weekly, again @ 8PM Central time. We will be putting together a schedule for license testing and classes. Repair and reinstallation of the school's antenna will be scheduled after the equipment is moved to the new electronics classroom. Randy K. KA0ZEE is working on way to get photos on ARES ID cards. Randy checked on getting registered as instructors, which will save $6 on cost of books. Discussion was held on participation in JOTA with the Scouts Oct 17, also the SET and District Scout Camp @ Wylie Park on Oct 10th. Ham Radio will be part of the Technical School Communication class in the Spring. The school equipment will be set up as a Lab bench in the classroom. Jerry Taylor, AC0PF, Electronics instructor attended the 4 day ARRL wireless institute over the summer, and will incorporate some of the material into the classroom. Jerry presented a short demo on magnetic fields and eddy currents using pvc, copper, & aluminum tubing and a magnet.

Northern Hills ARC (Lead, Deadwood, Sturgis, Belle Fourche)

We wish a speedy recover to Bruce Conlee who had back surgery. Jerry Hawley reported that the fund drive for the Bear Mountain repeater upgrade has been successful and we should be able to pay for all of the improvements with out too serious an impact to the treasury. The upgrade has been completed, with the new systems working well. The 25/85 repeater was moved back to the original location, with the antenna at about 100 feet. Chris Stallkamp requests additional net control volunteers for the Tri-State Weather Net. Gene McPherson reported that repairs have been completed at the Deadwood EOC. Gene also reported on the plans for the upcoming SET and is planning to include the Red Cross and Salvation Army as served agencies. Jerry Hawley volunteered to organize the details of the event. The New Underwood repeater will be allowed to link into the repeater system, with some administrative details yet to be completed. Officers for the new year will be: Gene McPherson -- President, Chris Stallkamp -- VP, Bruce Conlee -- Secretary, Jerry Hawley Treasurer, Carroll Cash and Harry Martens - Bd of Directors.

    Pierre ARC

Jim KCØWVF reported the batteries in the storage trailer need to be checked. The hamfest was a big success with good general attendance, good flea market participation and positive comments received from attendees. Work on the weather radar update continues, with one evaluated system not meeting our needs. The calling tree is still in development. The MOU with the state has one more year to go before expiration. The club will sponsor one free year of PARC membership to new licensees.

School of Mines ARC (Rapid City)

We have a lot of activities planned for this semester including an antenna demo system for incoming or high school students, participating in the CAMP events, and participating in Scouts' Jamboree on the Air. We put together a float for the M-Day parade. We also welcome several new members to the club. Design of a club tee shirt for our members is under consideration. The website needs to be updated. We are also looking forward to the November Sweepstakes and will be submitting our results in the Collegiate Championships. Alex and Karl demonstrated a new PSK-31 modem. We finished tuning Tom Linde's antenna at Black Hawk.

    Sioux Empire ARC (Sioux Falls)

A special event station was set up on 26 Sept at Falls Park featuring a "minimalist" hf station including the club's Yaesu 897 on battery power with a 20m vertical donated by Will KE0Z. Work continues on putting together an Elmer's list which takes advantage of members' expertise. Planning is underway for participation in the October SET.

    Dakota Chapter QCWA

The QCWA meets Sunday mornings on 3889 at 7:00am mountain time. You can search the internet for the QCWA site for membership information. The national organization publishes a nice quarterly journal.

    Region 10 Net

The Tenth Region SSB Traffic Net is meeting seven days a week in a Cycle 1&2 format at 10:00 AM and 3:45 PM Central time on 7.275 MHZ. The purpose is to handle traffic to, from and within the Tenth Region. We need operators from all sections to check in and handle the traffic for their respective section or bring traffic from their section for relay.

    State-wide

Many thanks to the Pierre club for sponsoring the wonderful hamfest this month. It was good to see so many SD hams attending and supporting the event, from such far flung points as Mobridge, Brookings, Sioux Falls, and quite a large group from the Hills. We're all hoping that after resting up, the Pierre group will have the energy to host another hamfest in a year or so.

The Simulated Emergency Test (SET) will be on 10 October. Thanks to Jerry Hawley, our SEC, and Gene McPherson for organizing the details of this year's SET. Take this opportunity to work with your Emergency Management agencies and participate. The goal for this year is to check out HF capabilities at county EOCs. Send a message over HF from your EOC to other state-wide participants. We will activate an HF net at 10:00 mountain time on 80 and 40 meters.

Please mark your calendars for the New Years Eve QSO party. Our annual QSO party will be expanded this year to be a part of the ARRL's "Year of the State QSO Party". We will begin at 10:00am Mountain time on New Years Eve, and operate through 1:00am Mountain time on New Years Day on 3860 or 3870 kHz, with other frequencies to be announced. An announcement will appear in QST, and details will appear on the Black Hills club's website. If you would like to operate, let me know by email and we'll get you on the schedule.

I hope everyone is enjoying the nice fall weather we're having now. I've heard on the nets that many hams are doing antenna work getting ready for the better operating conditions as we move into fall and winter.

Email your news items to me at serausch@aol.com by the 10th of the month for inclusion in this report. This report is archived at http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=SD.
