Hi Folks --
The Hurricane Season is upon us. The experts, warn us of the extreme danger and unpredictable actions of the hurricanes. Those of us who have been through a hurricane or two know exactly what they are telling us.
Hurricanes can strengthen tremendously in a matter of hours, taking coastal residents and the experts by surprise. No one can guarantee they will follow the predicted path.
So, we must monitor our broadcast media and listen to the local officials. If they tell us to evacuate, that is exactly what we should do.
Our Section Emergency Coordinator, Mike Schwartz, KG5TL, said, "I hope nothing will come our way, this season. But, if it does, we need to be prepared." Mike suggests we have a plan. That plan would include our evacuation route, any prescription medications to see us through the evacuation process, plenty of gas for our vehicle, and a place to goand stay for a few days.
If you are an ARES DEC or EC without a DEC, then Mike asks and encourages you to put together a "Ready Response List" of those individuals who would respond when needed with equipment. Mike would like for you to note the time these individuals could respond. With this information we can cut down on the time needed to respond.
NEWS FROM AROUND THE SECTION:
Rik, K5RIK reports that the Burnet/Llano Counties scored 167 of the 289 total SET points scored by the South Texas District.
Joe, KB5DTS tells us that ARES was included in a drill involving Huntsville and Walker Counties. Also, included was Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Joe says, "Because of our earned confidence, our local emergency management wanted to include us." Thanks, Joe for the good work and good reputation that ARES has in your neck of the woods.
Jeff, KE5FGA has just finished his publication "ARES District 14, Emergency Communication Plan." It is a bound volume that has taken many hours to complete. Mike Schwartz says, "I look forward to reading the plan and using it as part of the South Texas Section Emergency Plan."
On Wednesday, May 20, 2009, Corpus Christi ARES, RACES and others participated in HUREX 2009. The drill was a great success. Our hats off to you, for a job well done.
HamCom was a big success with somewhere between 4000 and 5000 people going through there. WOW!
Don't forget about ARRL Field Day on the 27th & 28th. Get out there and support your clubs each year. It's a great time.
Those of you that are having Field Day activities, please be sure and submit a short paragraph.
So, lots happening. Keep reporting your activities so we can share them with all in the STX Section.
Keep on a keepin' on!
