                                                   2009 CHALLENGE 500

Larry Bloomquist, KE7HGC, Vice President of the Clark County Amateur Radio Club, has offered a challenge to all other clubs and ARES teams

in Western Washington. "Let's license 500 NEW hams in Western Washington, in 2009". What a great idea! And while we are at it, let's get the new 500 to join ARRL.

To that end, As Section Manager I am kicking off CHALLENGE 500. Keep track of the numbers who get licensed through your Club or ARES Team, and keep track of the ones who join ARRL. Report your numbers to me and in December we will total the figures and the most outstanding team or club will be given special recognition. Remember, a new licensee counts for one point and a new ARRL membership counts for an additional point.

Let's share with others this hobby that has given us so much fun.

                                                                                  SECTION ANNOUNCEMENTS

    TRAINING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ARES PERSONNEL

In order to deploy efficient and well trained teams, in times of emergencies and for public service events, the Western Washington Leadership Team has developed the following minimum recommendations for all ARES personnel.  We do understand that some of our served agencies such as American Red Cross or local Department of Emergency Management, may require/mandate other training - which is within their authority to do so - however we believe that a basic education/training program can only strengthen our ability to serve when we are called.

Interested in Amateur Radio? Want to become a ham? The Technician class license is the first of the FCC Amateur Radio licenses.

MicroHams will be sponsoring three no-code Technician class courses in 2009 on February 27-March 1, May 29-31 and October 23-25.  There will also be one General Upgrade course the weekend of April 17-19.

Classes run 7:00pm-10:00pm Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm Saturday and 9:00am-noon Sunday with testing to follow after lunch. The class is available to anyone but we ask you register in advance because we have limited seating and materials. Testing will start at 1:00pm Sunday and is also open to the public by reservation.

The course will run $40 and includes a textbook, handouts and the testing fee. The W5YI Technician Class book by Gordon West will be provided including a number of other handouts, even discount coupons for new radios. If you already have a book, the class fee is $20. Testing is also open to anyone for any license class but those not enrolled in the class will need to pay the standard $14 testing fee.

Class locations will be determined as the dates approach. To register, simply email your contact information (name, phone number(s), preferred email address) to Classes@Microhams.com and state which class date you want.  Letting us know how you heard about the class would be helpful.

Develop your CW proficiency here! "ON" (the Olympia Amateur Radio Society Net) will meet every Tuesday on 3680 kHz. at 2000 local using 10 WPM CW. N7EIE is the NCS, and will be using some QN signals, but it is a beginner's net for practice.

                                                                             SLOW SPEED CW PRACTICE NET

I am the NCS on two Slow Speed Nets. One on Saturday night (local) at 0400 UTC 2100 PDT on 7.046. The other net is on Sunday at 2100 PDT 0400 UTC and it is on 3.5475.. Both of the nets are slow speed , We average about 7 to 12 WPM but will slow down for others if needed. The Nets are sponsored by the 3905 Century Club and they are WAS and Awards nets. The exchange is very simple but it also requires verification from another station not involved in the contact. Contacts made are also good for ARRL Awards. The club web site is www.3905ccn.com. The Club is currently operating CW Nets on 160 through 20M. Any of the nets will slow down for folks who need things slower. I have CC the Club President as well as the 40M Nets Manager. I have also included the file "CWnets101" which is good for beginners on any net. 73
