ARRL Los Angeles Section Newsletter
April, 2016

Greetings from David, N6HD, your ARRL Los Angeles Section Manager!

THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION LONG BEACH AMATEUR RADIO CLUB IS NEWESTARRL AFFILIATIED CLUB – The ARRL is excited to announce that the Veterans Administration Long Beach Amateur Radio Club has been approved as ARRL’s Los Angeles Section newest ARRL Affiliated Club.  The members worked hard to organize this club. The VA has been working closely with the club members and just recently provided them with a surplus VA communication trailer to hold their meetings in.  The club
is now working on acquiring a radio tower. The club has also joined the
Los Angeles Area Council of Amateur Radio Clubs.   For more information
please contact club president, Bill Bradley, WD6FON
billbradley33@sbcglobal.net (N6HD)

BAKER TO VEGAS RELAY CHALLENGE RECAP – Hundreds for Amateur Radio
operators, principally from California, Nevada and Arizona, came out at
their own expense to support the 2016 Baker to Vega Relay Challenge
March 19th through March 20th.  The more than one hundred Hams from the
ARRL Los Angeles Section made up a significant number of those providing
communications support.  In many cases the operators camped out
overnight either before or after the event in order to accommodate the
required schedule.  As in previous years, Joy Matlack, KD6FJV, was the
Communication Director with significant the help from Margie Hoffman,
KG6TBR.  Together they were responsible for organizing the Ham effort,
which is no small task and involves nearly a full year of planning and
preparation.  This event played host to 264 law enforcement teams in a
120 mile relay race course beginning just outside Baker, California
(near the south end of Death Valley) and ending in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Amateurs provided needed race staffing, but also filled potential
emergency communication gaps in remote portions of the course.  This
event allows Amateur Radio to showcase our abilities to law
enforcement.  The winning teams by order were LAPD Department Team,
LASD County Wide Team and the New York Police Department Team. Great
job, everyone! (N6HD)
