Maximilian Maria Kolbe OFM Conv. was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who during the World War II German occupation of Poland, volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Kolbe's call sign was SP3RN and in the early years of the Polish occupation he used his station to report the atrocities being committed by the Nazis. Kolbe has been recognized by the Catholic Church as the Patron Saint of Amateur Radio. August 14, 2019 marks the 78th anniversary of his death at Auchwitz. On that date members of the Cape May County Amateur Radio Club will operate a W2Saint Maximilian Kolbe, W2SMK, Commemorative Special Event Station at the Parish of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, 200 Tuckahoe Road, Marmora, New Jersey. The station will be on the air from 08:00 EDT until propagaton fades. Operations will be both CW and SSB on 20 and 40 meters. Amateur operators are encouraged to listen for and work the station.
