Im experiencing very sharp blasts of static on my relatively new 857, which I don't hear with any of 2 HTs and an FT-2900. What could be the problem?

Typically, most broadband interference sources get worse, the lower you go in frequency. Many sources you hear on HF will be inaudible on VHF, unless you get very close to the source.

Most sources are found by either direction finding, or selectively turning off circuit breakers to deduce where the device is located.

So you're on 2M FM? What does the "static" sound like? Could it be that your squelch setting is too sensitive? That would make small changes in received noise level "break squelch" and make a big racket. Maybe you just need to back off the squelch.

Or are you hearing noise on top of a real signal? That would be a different issue.
