Steve Mendelsohn W2ML / SK (May 23 2012)

A very good friend to many in SNJ Section.

Steve lived in the Hudson Division but he had many friends in Southern New Jersey.

Steve served as Hudson Division director for many years and subsequently as First Vice President of the League.

Steve was communications coordinator of the NYC Marathon from the  beginning and also communications coordinator of the Miami Marathon.

Steve had also served as President of the North Jersey DX  Association (incoming ARRL QSL bureau for the second call area) and the Bergen County Radio Association.

Steve was truly a Giant in the ham radio community and will be dearly missed by many.

Great News, Everyone! (May 3 2012)

Please mark July 28 and 29 on your Calendars:The NJQP is back!

New Jersey QSO Party Returns!

After a one year vacation the NJQP returns in 2012 on a new date – July 28th and 29th, sponsored by the Burlington County Radio Club. Englewood ARA elected to relinquish sponsorship following the 2010 NJQP.

Rules and additional information are available at www.njqp.hamshack.info

Contact njqp@comcast.net with questions or comments.

We are pleased to announce that plaques for the high scoring SNJ and NNJ stations are sponsored by the respective ARRL section managers, a plaque for the highest out-of-state score is sponsored by BCRC, and a gavel for the high scoring club aggregate score in NJ will be presented by BCRC.

BCRC would like all 21 NJ counties to be active and we’re counting on the NJ Ham community to help out. Join in the fun with us this summer, maybe get out in the great outdoors and operate. If you do plan to enjoy the revival of the NJQP, we would appreciate it if you let us know which county you’ll be activating.

BCRC would like to thank the Englewood ARA for their many years of sponsoring past NJQPs. It was a good run, thanks!

ARRL SNJ Section Monthly Newsletter - May 2012

Please join with me in Welcoming Frank Huminski, K2SQS of Burlington County as Assistant Section Manager. Over the years, I've come to know Frank as the "Go-To -Guy" for the Burlington County Area. Frank will be making ARRL resources available to anybody within that area. Thank you, Frank and Welcome Aboard!

On another note: I would like to personally thank our Incumbent ASM's Pappy Cole, N2CSA - Tim Cwik, N2LTQ and Gary Wilson, K2GW for taking the helm during some distressing times I've had to endure here at home. You fellows have truly been outstanding Statesmen and more importantly, very dear friends to myself and members of our Section. Thank you so much for everything you have done and continue to do!

I have recently received news concerning the dates and scenario for the next ARRL SNJ Section SET Exercise. The Confirmed date for the SNJ SET is scheduled for the weekend of October 6 and 7 - Although the announcement seems premature, it's not to early to start planning. The Content of the SET Scenario seems to have already been established too. Without giving up to much information, John Zaruba Jr. K2ZA, SNJ SEC has a Cyber Attack Scenario in the works. Served agencies  within our Section will be paying very close attention to this particular exercise. After reading the rough draft, I guarantee,This one's going to be a hoot! John is going to Shake, Rattle and Roll your Emcomm Mo-Jo! Anyone who is not a member of an ARES Group is highly encouraged to join one for this new SET. Please contact your local Emergency Coordinators(EC), Assistant Emergency Coordinators(AEC) or District EC's(DEC) for more information. You can also find an EC in your area by visiting the ARRL Website or by Contacting any ARRL SNJ Official.

Field day is approaching swiftly. Now would be a good time to begin an inventory and maintenance of your equipment, especially since the cooler weather is upon us. If you've ever seen a last minute team try to pull it together, it's a rather interesting and somewhat comical sight to behold - But Hey, that's part of the fun of Amateur Radio too...Hi Hi

Another Event falling upon us is International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend (ILLW) The "Official" ILLW Event will be on August 18 and August 19, 2012 - Although there is usually another ILLW event sometime before that, The listed dates are currently considered to be for the officially recognized ILLW Contest among Elmer's however, your encouraged to work any event that's fulfilling for yourself and your group.

The New Jersey QSO Party Returns!  After a one year vacation the NJQP returns in 2012 on a new date – July 28th and 29th, sponsored by the Burlington County Radio Club. Additional rules and  information will be made available under separate cover very shortly.

Also from Burlington County Radio Club (BCRC) - Are you Interested in learning CW?  Want some practice to hone your CW skills and increase your speed?  Skip Arey, N2EI,  of BCRC is interested in helping anyone wishing to learn CW.  A few folks have already expressed interest and Skip is looking for a place to hold the CW sessions. Please contact Skip, N2EI if you’re interested or if you can help in locating a suitable site! - "Uncle" Skip is also the SNJ Section Affiliated Club Coordinator    (ACC). Thank you, Skip... for more information, pls visit the BCRC site at    http://www.k2td-bcrc.org/

We are going to try a new tactic for reporting the STM's Traffic Reports and SEC Reports. Since the advent of online document storage first appeared several years ago, we've continually tried to exploit that for mass information purposes. Since privacy controls made doing this almost impossible the idea was scratched several times. Well, Google docs (now known as Drive) is were we are going to begin storing SEC and Traffic Reports. The Privacy controls are a bit more relaxed which will make sharing online reports much easier. The Emphasis will simply be a  click-able link to the report. I've found this method of reporting to be a great way for viewing/reviewing current and past reports throughout the entire year. I'll post a link to the reports on the SNJ Section website and there will also be a click-able link within the text version of the Monthly newsletter. Your feedback with this method would be greatly appreciated.

This is an announcement I am truly glad to make. For sometime ARRL Awards within the Section have been almost non-existent and that's going to change immediately and forever. I've been listening to all of the on-air activities for some time. I've never been much of a rag-chewer but I've always been an avid listener. Over the last few months, I've heard just about everything that SNJ Hams have been doing in service to their communities. The last event was of course the MS Bike Tour. This being said, I feel that whenever any Amateur Operator within the Section does something grandiose for Amateur Radio, they should obviously be rewarded. So I'm going to politely ask our Section Leadership to report Commendable or Meritorious activity and personally see to it that individuals receive awards for their achievements.

In closing, I am going to post regular news updates as they're received. I'll post new activity to the SNJ Section page. Before the end of each month. We'll summarize everything we've accumulated and pass that along using the ARRL Section Email Reflector.

Thank you es 73

Special message to ARRL SNJ Section Affiliated Clubs

 Hello Members

As you may already know, our ARRL SNJ Section Monthly newsletter has been unavailable ever since the ARRL introduced their new website a couple years back.Since then, there have been many new improvements to the site and we are now ready to once again revive the Monthly SNJ Section Newsletter. So, in an effort to help us along, I would like to ask all of our SNJ Section ARRL Affiliated clubs to double check their club links listed within the ARRL SNJ Section website. The purpose of doing this (as we do on a regular basis) is so that I/we can read your newsletters.

The emphasis is and always has been to remain informed about what is happening in your clubs and to possibly pass your relevant news/information to the rest of the Section. I've recently noticed while perusing club websites, many broken and missing links and so therefore, please double check your clubs listing by visiting...  http://www.arrl.org/find-a-club

As always, I am grateful to our clubs who send copies of their newsletters directly to my email address. I would like to ask those clubs to also include Lynn Fogle, KC2ZJW SNJ PIO at kc2zjw@arrl.net to their mailing list

If your club is not listed and you still wish to have your news or information propagated to SNJ Section; You may also, at anytime, send it directly to...

Lynn Fogle, KC2ZJW - kc2zjw@arrl.net
