Sep 21, 1300Z-2000Z, K2ZRO, Vestal, NY. Binghamton Amateur Radio Association. 14.273. QSL. Binghamton Amateur Radio Association, 698 Underwood Road, Vestal, NY 13850. Join the Binghamton Amateur Radio Association (BARA) as we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center, nestled in Vestal, New York. Kopernik has been a guiding light in astronomical exploration for half a century. Established in 1974 by the Kopernik Society of Broome County it offers interactive investigations, community outreach programs, and cutting-edge telescopes for stargazers of all ages. BARA proudly calls Kopernik home. As part of our jubilant celebration, we will be operating Amateur Radio Special Event Station K2ZRO. Ham radio enthusiasts, science aficionados, and community members are cordially invited to visit Kopernik and connect with us on the airwaves. K2ZRO plans to operate voice, CW, and digital on 15, 20, and 40 meters. Check https://dxsummit.fi/ for spotting info. The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center has a permanent amateur radio station using the club call sign K2ZRO. The station is often open during public programs on Friday evenings. The call sign K2ZRO belonged to Kazimierz Deskur, one of the founding members of the Kopernik Society, who built the Kopernik Observatory. Deskur heard some of the first signals from Sputnik, and this led to his interest in amateur radio satellites (the facility has an original Sputnik QSL card). He was an early pioneer in amateur radio satellites and developed a device called the OSCAR Locator, a great circle map-like device to aid hams in tracking satellite orbits. For further information please contact Drew Deskur KA1M at ddeskur@kopernik.org. Drew is the President of BARA, Director of Kopernik, and son of K2ZRO. https://www.kopernik.org
