09/19/2012 | A QRP DE-Xpedition from Radio Central aboard the USS SLATER (DE-766)
Sep 19, 1600Z-2359Z, K2N, Albany, NY. US Members of INORC . 7.031 14.061 18.097. QSL. Stan Levandowski, K2N/WB2LQF, 6 Chatham Court, Fishkill, NY 12524. We will be operating barefoot Elecraft KX3s from the LOPs ("local operating positions") in the radio room ("Radio Central") aboard the historic USS SLATER which is now permanently berthed on the Hudson River in Albany, New York USA. This will be a QRP CW event of eight (8) hours duration. We will be using the authentically restored shipboard verticals (70 and 80 feet) and horizontal antennas (100 and 190 feet). All the operators are military vets - we're as authentic as the ship is! The USS SLATER (DE-766) is the only surviving destroyer escort in the world that has been returned to its original 1945 condition - which means the engines start, the ship floats, the 3" fifty caliber guns rotate and fire (blanks, of course!), and just about everything else - inside and out - has either been restored or will be.This includes the rare RCA TBL-8 transmitter restored by Tom Horsfall WA6OPE, and RBC and RAL-7 receivers. Of course, such military equipment does not readily lend itself to QRP operation so that's why we'll be coming aboard with our state-of-the-art modern QRP rigs. So please give a listen for us on September 19th and drop your call in. QRP WORKS! And while you're waiting for September 19th to roll around, check out www.ussslater.org for some great background on the history of destroyer escorts, the life and times of the USS SLATER, and for some insight into the amount of effort, dedication, and money it took to bring the USS SLATER back home to the U.S.A. and restore this capital ship to her original wartime condition.
