The Olympia (Washington) Amateur Radio Society (OARS) is a dramatic example of a well-rounded, active club. With about 100 members, OARS boasts an excellent newsletter, repeaters on 2, 220 and 440, and radio support of many civic events. OARS provides a 3-Node packet facility and packet BBS. A number of our members are APRS-equipped with portable trackers, and one member, W7SIX, operates a local WIDE digipeater on Tumwater Hill.

OARS members are leaders in disaster response communications; our President Dan, KB7DFL, is a mainstay in ARES/RACES.

A typical year under the OARS umbrella finds its members managing all aspects of the Lakefair (Olympia's 4th of July) parade, the Capitol City Marathon (supplemented with APRS this year), the YMCA 10K fun run, Boy Scout Jamboree on the air, several SCCA car "pro-rallies," a 500-horse ride through the woods called the Diabetes Horse-a-thon, mock search and rescues (and occasionally, the real thing).

OARS has lively monthly meetings that always include a formal program. OARS sponsors ham dinners and a summer picnic, and weekly nets on our linked repeaters (7:30 PM every Tuesday, on 147.36). OARS offers swap tables at local swap meets. And, OARS supports an aggressive teaching program that has offered three formal classes this year, with three currently in the works.

OARS's Field Day efforts under club call sign NT7H have been a constant for 25 years. In recent years OARS has set up Field Day operations in extremely public places such as the area's "Farmer's Market" (shown above). These locations are not so good for operation but excellent for public visibility. We're there to showcase ham radio, not to rack up the Qs! The club owns a trailer-mounted 50-foot "crank-up" tower on which a tri-bander and dipoles, and our banner flying proudly, reside each year.

OARS members lobbied and helped get the state's "PRB-1" law passed; our location in the state's capitol city was a clear advantage.
