                                                W1AW LIVE Tour

On Sunday, February 12th at 5 p.m. Eastern time, ARRL and Al Petrunti of The New Day Group will webcast a LIVE tour of W1AW – the ARRL flagship station. Amateurs around the country (and the world) will be able to watch it at http://www.awecast.tv/channels/arrl/ .

“Hams around the world know of W1AW and thousands have made contacts with this impressive station, but most never get to see it,” said Allen Pitts, W1AGP, who is producing the event. “Thanks to Al Petrunti’s group, we hope that folks enjoy seeing what’s at the other end of the signals.”

You will be there as Petrunti, KA1TCH, local weatherman Geoff Fox, K1GF, and others are given a tour by Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q. As in all live broadcasts, you never know just what might happen. We invite you to join us. Petrunti, KA1TCH, also created the video about HR-607 for ARRL.

You can learn more about W1AW at www.arrl.org/w1aw and about the New Day Group at www.NewDayHD.com .

ARES INFO FROM THE COLORADO SEC:

Hello all:

I hope you had a great Christmas. The New Year brings with it new opportunities.

First, it is with regret that I accept the resignation of Rob Roller, N7LV, as Emergency Coordinator of District 14, El Paso and Teller Counties. Rob is leaving for personal reasons and we wish him and his family the very best with heartfelt thanks for his leadership of that district over the past two years. A search will begin for a new EC over the next few weeks. Working with the D14 staff and the newly appointed Region EC for the South Central Region I hope that we will have several applications for this very important position.

I plan on attending D14’s next F2F to share with them our new organizational plan and opportunities for the future of A.R.E.S.   Speaking of the newly appointed Region Emergency Coordinator for the South Central Region, maybe I should tell you who that is. I have asked Sharon Agun, KCØPBR, former EC for District 17 to step up to that position. The CDEM South Central All Hazards Region encompasses El Paso, Teller, Park, Chaffee, and Lake counties; A.R.E.S. Districts 14, 6, and 18. Sharon is also very familiar with the Southeast Region and portions of the Northeast Region and will coordinate with the Region ESc in those areas to advance the interests of A.R.E.S. in the local districts of those regions. Thank you, Sharon, for you willingness to serve.

Of course Sharon’s appointment left the D17 EC position vacant, but it seemed only logical to ask her husband, Ken Niles, KCØPBQ, to assume those duties. Ken is active with the Arkansas Valley Radio Club which operates repeaters throughout southeast Colorado. Please welcome Ken to the ranks of District Emergency Coordinators.

As you know, I appointed two Assistant Section Emergency Coordinators when I took office. Perry Lundquist is ASEC for Administration, Training and Credentialing. John Maxwell, known best for his involvement with Rocky Mountain Ham Radio, is ASEC for State Facilities and Deployment. I have asked our former Section Emergency Coordinator to act as John’s deputy and he has agreed. David Markham, WØCBI, is Deputy Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator.

In an effort to increase cooperation and communication between other amateur radio and/or disaster response organizations I am making some “at-large” Emergency Coordinator appointments. The first of those is the appointment of Bob Zimprich, KBØBZZ, as the Colorado Section Liaison to S.A.T.E.R.N. and The Salvation Army.

Frank Watervoort, ABØWV, has been working on a complete upgrade to the Colorado ARES website. Our new website will be more attractive and friendlier to use. We are also exploring allowing each district to host their own web page on the site, should they wish to do so. Look for more information coming soon.

Please extend your thanks and congratulations to these hams who have agreed to step forward and assume leadership responsibilities.

Finally, I am looking forward to meeting with the Boulder County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (BCARES) at its annual meeting on January 23rd!

73,   Robert Wareham, NØESQ

Monthly Rocky Mountain ARRL Division Net

Communications remains a challenge in a Division that spans nearly from the northern border of Mexico to southern border of Canada. Passing information by email and this Division website is the easiest way to communicate to so many people in a quick fashion. But why not involve good ole' ham radio? The ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Net occurs monthly to disseminate information and give us a chance to meet you and your ideas via QSO. All Division members and interested hams are invited to participate. Here are the details:

  • Frequency: Your local VHF/UHF IRLP repeater!
  • The node number you should link to from your local IRLP-capable repeater: 9871
  • Date: Second Wednesday of each month
  • Time: 7:30 PM MDT

Check out http://www.irlp.net (Node Info section) to find an IRLP-capable repeater in your area. Generally all you need to do to link into the reflector is enter "9871" with your DTMF keypad and wait for the voice prompt indicating that the link is open. To unlink, enter "73". However, to be safe, check with your local IRLP repeater's trustee to confirm beforehand since some repeaters have custom codes. Their contact information is found when searching for IRLP repeaters in your area. If you've never used IRLP before (you'll be fascinated by it) please experiment with linking/unlinking before the net.

The DRC also posts a complete list of local ham nets on the site. The link is http://www.w0tx.org/netlist.htm.
