I ve been monitoring the IRLP channel 9258 as much as possible. If you need to reach me please try calling me there. I ran some packet tests in Tonopah and found that the central NV area is isolated from the remainder of the Section. The only packet service is in Bishop, CA on 145.01 with no links to any known BBS system. APRS was the only reliable packet service in the area that can reach locations in the NW and Southern NV. There is one 145.05 digipeater in Esmeralda Co. located on Gold Mt. with Ron s call WB5KLJ-3 beaconing on it.

For my first report I found out that I have much to get in order for next month. D3 has made great strides in packet with John running the show. Also we are moving forward with the hospital program thanks to Bob Miller and Dave Law. I feel that their hours should show up on the report

Subject: Northwestern Nevada Packet Network

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on the Northwestern Nevada 
Packet Network. So far we have interlinked Carson, Douglas, Lyon, Churchill, Pershing, and Humboldt county utilizing the BPQ software. We have internet links between each system and RF up on 145.050 and 145.090. Each county has its own BBS to handle message traffic. I plan to work on the UHF backbone link this summer when we access to the repeater sites. I'm working with Andy KD7ZEV to get the Washoe County BPQ node/BBS online in the next few days. I have no direct plans for Story County. Given its location its should be able to get into the network without the addition of another node/bbs.

Mineral County doesn't seem to have much ARES activity so I will wait till a later date to worry about a system for there. The Hospitals in Carson, Douglas, Lyon, Churchill, Pershing, Humboldt, and Story County can communicate over the packet network to each other. They will need some training for their operators on how to utilize the network.

Southern NV Report, Jay KE7EGO

With the end of January and beginning of February, we start looking towards the spring's public service events.  Coming up are two big ones: American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure bike ride and the Nevada Open Road Challenge. Both are excellent opportunities to go and polish up on operating portable.  And speaking of operating portable, Field Day will be here before we know it! 

Gerry, KC6ILH advises that it was a Nice slow month. Spring is just around the corner. Start planning for those events. 

Bill, W7HMV Comments: At our first meeting of the year, the Las Vegas Repeater Association (LVRA) drove its Mobile Communications Center to our location. After the meeting and as part of some training in preparation for the annual interoperable communications exercise sponsored by Las Vegas METRO and the City of North Las Vegas PD, the vehicle was stood up and attendees were shown the installed public safety radios and had an opportunity to "play" with them.  We had 24 ARES members and two guests from the LVRA who shot some video and photos.  Another guest, was Jeff Yeagley, who is the Chief Engineer at the Las Vegas PBS facility.  Because EMCOMMWEST will not be held this year, Jeff told us of his idea to have a mini-EMCOMM themed event at the PBS facility in the fall. Everyone was in favor of such an event, but a lot has to be done and flushed out before it comes to fruition.  I was able to sign for 3 hospital radio kits, including the HAMLINK systems on behalf of Clark County ARES/RACES. These kits will be used deployed to the Clark County ECC, and the EOCs for the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas.  Also, we plan on installing a significant upgrade to the county ECC's packet radio capability next month, with a more modern 2-meter transceiver and a KPC-9612+ TNC. Finally, we are going lose a very active ARES member in February:  Gene Simmons, KK4IB, who is moving away.  Gene has been an active member, participating in a lot of ARES meetings and activities.  We will miss him.

Heavy snow loading in the mountains still. Unable to access to place new APRS digi on Cave Mtn, or packet digi on Kimberly Mtn. Hopefully going to be scheduling HamLink training soon for the hospital packet project, other members are getting interested playing with packet. Tom Love KF7NKW earned one new General license on his visit to the Qaurtszite Ham Fest. A VE session was scheduled for our club's ( Eastern NV Amateur Radio Society ) January meeting. No tests were administered as the individual said he was not ready.

Acting SEC:

Glenn Hale,KB7REO, ASEC of the Nevada Section is standing in for Don Carlson, KQ6FM SEC while Don is dealing with some health issues.  Glen and Dick Creeley,KJ7UK our other ASEC in the north are working together to compile reports and coordinate ARES activities in the Section.  A Section ARES Report should be forthcoming and will be posted as soon as it arrives.

 HELP WANTED:  

We currently have several Section-Level Appointment openings within the field organization of the ARRL in the Nevada Section.

The Nevada Section is in need of a State Government Liaison.  This position assists with communicating with our legislators and other State officials.  We are between legialative sessions, so now is the time to get our desires heard regarding such items as modifying the Nevada Hands-Free Law .  There is als an alarming move in Idaho Legislature to require lighting of all towers greater than 50 feet.  A State legislator is also a pilot.  Supposedly he feels this is a risk to crop dusters.  TheNational Pilot's association is also in support of this.  Be on the lookout for this in our legislature who is now in session.

The second position is the Section Traffic Manager.  This position oversees the the handling of all message traffic within the Section and the operation of nets in support of the National Traffic System through various Net Managers.  This position does not need to be a whiz at CW operation as traffic handling including that done by the NTS is comprised of CW, voice and digital traffic nets and systems.
