06/16/2012 | 367th anniversary of the Battle of Naseby
Jun 16-Jun 17, 0800Z-2000Z, GB0BON, Market Harborough, ENGLAND. Welland Valley Aateur Radio Society. 14.285 10.140 7.140. QSL. Peter D. Rivers, 34 Coales Gardens, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 7NY, ENGLAND. Also the third anniversary of GB0BON. It all started in June 2010 when a small group of locally based licensed Radio Amateurs, who are all members of the Welland Valley Amateur Radio Society, decided to run a special event amateur radio station as a one off event to coincide with our annual barbeque. (A full report of the weekend can be found on the clubs Website, www.wvars.com/ and was also published in Radcom in August 2010.) A special license was obtained from the licensing authority, OFCOM, who issued the group with the call sign GB0BON. Permission was obtained from the owners of the land on which the battle took place and trustees of the Naseby Battle Field Project, a registered charity No 1119178, to erect antennas and to set up the station. All the equipment needed was begged borrowed or otherwise obtained from members and a firm date set for the operation of the station. The station was set up at Rupert’s Viewpoint on the 20th June and was on air for about 8 hours. Although it was a very low key event and the station was only on for one day it proved very popular and managed to attract a number of visitors and made over 160 contacts to licensed amateurs round the world from Japan in the east to the USA in the west. The 2010 field day at Rupert’s Viewpoint was an outstanding success and proved very popular so the Welland Valley Amateur Radio Society decided to put on a second special event station on the following year, 2011, over the weekend of the 18th/19th June. We obtained the same special call sign from the regulator OFCOM, and again obtained permission from the land owners to use the land located at Rupert’s Viewpoint on the Clipston Road just south of Market Harborough in Leicestershire, to set up the station and antennas. It was again a great success despite the really bad weather so 2012 will be our third field day. In 2012 our main days of operation will be the 17th/18th June when we will be set up and open to visitors from 0900 hrs until the petrol in our generator runs out. This year we will be specifically inviting young people from both local youth groups and local schools to visit the station and see an Amateur Radio Field Day set up in operation. We will also be enlisting the help of our local commercial radio station HFM, our local paper, The Harborough Mail and the Leicester Mercury to publicise GB0BON, The Welland Valley Amateur Radio Society and Amateur Radio. This year it is hoped that we will be able to run Data communications as well as voice and if conditions allow even some Slow Scan Television. We are very fortunate in having the support of the land owners and the Naseby Battlefield Project. (A registered charity No 11191781). Who not only allow us to take over their car park and use their land, but who also give us access to their flag pole etc. to mount our antennas on. We very much welcome visitors who will be able to see and hear Short Wave (HF) Amateur Radio in operation and talk to local Amateurs about the hobby. There will also be a small display of other radios including a Russian Military Radio and the opportunity for anyone who has an interest in radio to find out how to obtain a licence. Rupert’s Viewpoint is one of the highest vantage points in the area and was chosen by Prince Rupert because of the all-round field of view it gave him. It is also a superb location for a VHF and UHF station for the same reasons. It is also ideal for HF giving us as it does plenty of room to erect long wire antennas clear of trees and other obstructions. Rupert’s Viewpoint and the other areas of interest on and around the battlefield are maintained by The Naseby Battlefield Project a Registered Charity No 11191781 Peter Rivers G4XEX Secretary Welland Valley Amateur Radio Society Email g4xex@fsmail.net Tel 01858 432105 www.wvars.com
