07/05/2007 | W2SO Not Our Average Field Day. I've been a member of W2SO for 7 years now. The usual routine for FD is we come out set up our own gear and we each keep our own paper log that never seems to get turned in. Like the rest of you we have a good time with plenty to eat and the event comes and goes with not much new happening. This year with a little prodding we chose to make some much needed improvements to get some excitement into the event. This year with the help of club members we set up a central computer for each of us to log into using N3FJPs FD networking software (works great) and one of our club members set up a RTTY station, we also had one of our CW ops drop by and work a little CW for us. If that wasn't enough we also requested a visit from our local TV station, they did in fact come out and we appeared on the evening news. Prior to the event we sent out several e-mails to the club membership about our FD intentions and this year we had more members drop by than normal too. Lastly were putting this entry onto the soapbox site as well for the first time. We all agreed it was our best FD ever and now that the excitement has been lit everyone is looking forward to next year.
P.S. Yes we even had a machine gun jeep on site that was brought out by one of our club members who collects military vehicles, how's that for protection.
