2007 ARRL November Sweepstakes (CW)

11/05/2007 | WA2GBF I always look forward to CWSS, and enjoy working it QRP (even if my scores aren't exactly astronomical). This year, because of other personal commitments, I didn't have the time to finish the new antenna that I was sure would be the score-maker: a helically loaded 15 meter vertical dipole that NEC said would do exactly what I needed.

Am I ever glad I never got to waste my time building it. As it turns out, my experience was much like the other OM's have said. 20 was the band for daylight and early evening operation, then 40, then finally retreat to 80.

When I read what the sunspot count and solar flux were, I figured I would pretty much be happy with just making Pins. Since I didn't have full time available this year to compete, I spent my time hunting and pouncing trying to get a sweep. Only made 66 sections this year, but had fun when I was able to operate.

I just wish I saw more recent numbers in the Ck column. Us old guys need some more fresh blood to give us a run for our money. -- WA2GBF
