2008 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/02/2008 | N8XMS SKN is always a fun event, even when conditions are poor and time is limited. I made seven QSOs on 40-meters running my Elecraft K1 at 4 watts into my old Cushcraft R7 vertical. We had a significant torm during the night and most of my contacts were made with a nice coating of ice and snow on my antenna.

I used a unique antique strap key that was made at the School of Engineering of the University of Michigan. One knowledgeable collector has estimated that the key dates back to the 1920's and was probably used for classroom demonstrations. The key is non-adjustable and is rather stiff, but it is still a lot of fun to use. As a graduate of U of M, I am absolutely convinced that the CW vibrations in the ether that I made with this key helped the Maize and Blue to win its bowl game! -- N8XMS
