2008 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/22/2008 | K9JM For SKN I assembled the station that I used in 1967. Christmas in 1966 when I was 14, brought me a used Heath Apache TX-1. How Santa got down the chimney, I will never know. I rebuilt it this December 2007. My Dad, Ben WB2WBZ (SK), was studying for his ham ticket, decided to build a homebrew receiver, the HBR-13C from a 1965 QST. I pulled the HBR from his attic after his death and rebuilt it December 2006. The chrome plated front panel gives it a real look of the '60s. The blue paint was touch up paint for our 1960 Ford. In '67 I also built a solid state keyer from March 1962 QST. This and a J-38 straight key was one of my rigs for SKN. You really need to operate old equipment to realize how much things have changed and how much remains the same in 40+ years. It was a great time!
