2010 ARRL 10 GHz and Up Contest

08/27/2010 | W8ISS

It was a dark and stormy night.....

OK, it wasn't dark or stormy but it did rain on the fisrt day of the 10 GHZ and up contest for me.

Started out at Sterling State Park EN81hv around 7:30am EDT and got set up for the first portion of my planned outting for Saturday. All I would have would be 10 Ghz to play with which was a new (to me) DEMI 10mw transverter along with a borrowed 250mw amplifier.

Made seven contacts from Sterling over Lake Erie into Ohio. Best distance - 187 km (En81hv to En91kt).

Operated from there until about 12:30pm when I ventured down to the 'Lost Peninsula' area of Michigan. Only way to get there was to drive a little into Ohio and then back North into Michigan. Found out that this location was not the best for a rover station as everything was private access to the good operating areas..:( Ended up in a resteraunt parking lot (with permission) that had only one good direction to operate to, East over Lake Erie.

Made six contacts from here into Ohio. Best distance - 194 km (EN81gr to EN91KT).

On Sunday, had planned to be back at Sterling bright and early again but over slept the alarm clock. Arrived around 9am and met up with K8JA and WA8VPD. Operated from there till around 4:30pm. Made contact with the stations I missed on Satruday and a few other rovers in Ohio.

Made six contacts from here into Ohio again. Best distance - 187 km (EN81hv to EN91kt).

All in all, it was a good outing for me this year so far. Did four times as many contacts as I have in the past few years.

Now to plan for the second weekend out along Lake Michigan near Traverse City.
