2010 ARRL September VHF Contest

12/30/2010 | WB6W

This  years effort brought WB6W, WA6ZTY, and ex-WB6TIE together on a remote Sierra Nevada fire lookout at 5000' in the Sacramento Valley section. Our 5 band effort (50, 144, 220, 432, 1296 MHz) was our most ambitious so far. Yagis on all but 220.  The wind was pretty strong when we arrived at the site Friday night and we had some concerns about our antennas, but by Saturday morning it was calm and sunny.

Having no shelter, we relied on the shade of the fire lookout for relief from the sun, but it (the sun) kept moving and we didn't keep up with it.  WB6W came home a few shades redder.  There was a faint smell of smoke Sunday morning and when the sun arose, we saw smoke rising from a forest fire some miles north.  The fire was not too far from our only exit route and this had a lot to do with our decision to shut down a few hours early and make an orderly retreat.
