2011 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/02/2011 | WB8DQT

This year I wanted to team up my Swedish Pump key with a vintage transmitter, so built a basic two-tube design by Don Mix (W1TS) that appeared in the October 1968 issue of QST. I set the rig up for 4 watts output to stay within the QRP envelope and had half-a-dozen crystals for 40 meters. When I finally got started Saturday morning the band was pretty crowded between 7030 and 7045, so most of my crystals were out of play. I set up camp on 7047 and still worked a dozen or so stations. It was a different mix than I can remember from previous SKN operations. There are a lot more SK operators out there thanks to the SKCC and some were operating SKN and others just operating! Overall, the quality of the fists I heard was quite high. I worked quite a few old Novice stations dusted off for the occasion and most sounded quite good. A few were at the opposite end of the quality spectrum, mostly because of drifting/chirpy VFOs. The usual high level of courtesy and lots of activity made for another memorable SKN experience.
